Nelson Mandela was a south African nationalist leader. Nelson Mandela was born on July 18th 1918 in the south African village of Mvezo. Nelson Mandela's goal was to end apartheid in south Africa. Miss Mdingane gave him the name nelson in accordance with the custom of giving all school children christian names.

Apartheid is a law passed in south Africa that kept the whites and blacks seperate and unequal. some examples are pass laws africans had to caary around a pass and any white person could stop an african and demand to see it or the african would be arested. the pass law was not all equal for all people in africa. Africans had no right to vote in there own country. and intermagige betwen whaites and blacks was forbidin

under pressure from the international community the national party government sought to institute some reforms including abolishing the pass laws and the ban on interracial marriage. in 1989 De Klerk's government repealed the population registration Act, as well as other legislation that formed the legal basis for apartheid.

Africans wanted independence because of the apartheid laws because they where not equal for all people nelson Mandela was opposed to apartheid because it took away basic rights of Africans in there own town nelson Mandela used peaceful protest just like ghandi used in India. After the end of Apartheid Africans voted in the in the first election they could and voted nelson Mandela President of south Africa.

Nelson Mandela was arrested in a countrywide police swoop on December 5th 1955. In 1956 Mandela was tried for treason. Mandela was acquitted on March 29th 1961.

on January 11th 1962 Mandela left south Africa Using the name David Motsamayi. upon returing Mandela was arested and charged with leaving the country with out a permit and inciting a strike he was convicted of five years in prision. Nelsons mother and eldest son died when he was in prision he was not allowed to attend the furnal.

On May 10th 1994 Nelson Mandela was inaugurated as South Africa's first democratically elected president.
