Early Life and Family
- He was born on December 17, 1936 in Buenos Aires, Argentina
- His real name is Jorge Mario Bergoglio
- His parents are Mario Jose Bergoglio and Regina Maria Sivori
- He has four siblings: Maria Elena Bergoglio, Alberto Horacio, Oscar Adrian, and Marta Regina
Becoming a Jesuit (1960-1992)
- He decided to become a priest when he was at confession and the priest inspired him
- He went to Inmaculada Concepcion Seminary, an archdiocesan seminary
- After three years at the seminary, he entered the Society of Jesus on March 11, 1958
- He studied humanities in Santiago, Chile
- He officially became a Jesuit on March 12, 1960 when he took the perpetual vows of poverty, chastity, and obediance.
- He taught in many schools about psychology and literature.
- He took his final vow, obedience to the Pope, on April 22, 1973
- He was named rector of the Society of Jesus, but later that was taken aways because of the way he taught
Bishop (1992-2001)
- He was named Auxilary Bishop of Buenos Aires in 1992
- On June 27, 1992 he was ordained Titular Bishop of Auca
- His episcopal motto is "Miserando atque eligendo" meaning lowly but chosen
- On February 28, 1998, he was made Metropilitan Archbishop of Buenos Aires
- With this title, he rebuilt parishes, administrative offices, led prolife initiatives, and created a divorce commision
- He also doubled the work of priests in the slums of Buenos Aires, which gave him the nickname "Slum Bishop"
Cardinal (2001-2013)
- On February 21, 2001, he was named cardinal of San Roberto Bellarmino by Pope John Paul II
- He became known for his personal humility, doctrinal conservatism, and a commitment to social justice.
- He lives a very simple lifestyle.
- He is devoted to St. Therese of Lisieux and he calls her "a great missionary saint"
- He was associated with Communion and Liberation, a Catholic movement known as association of the faithful
- He was blamed for the kidnapping of two priests, which got him in a serious problem with the law.
Elected Pope (2013-Present)
- He was elected March 13, 2013 at age 76.
- He was the first Pope to be Jesuit, from the Americas, and from the Southern Hemisphere.

- He chose Francis to be his name after St. Francis of Assisi because "He is the man who gives us spirit, the poor man."
