Keith Waithe & The Macusi Players

"Simply one of the most exciting improvising musicians this country has ever seen." Kevin Le Gendre (BBC Radio 3)

Keith Waithe & The Macusi Players are a world music jazz band that offer compelling live performances that are as energetic as they are mesmerising. As bandleader, Keith Waithe is a natural performer, combining humour with crowd participation and an exceptional skill to improvise, The Macusi Players leave a captivated audience guessing as to what they will hear next.

By drawing upon a wealth of experience, Keith Waithe & The Macusi Players fuse together rhythms and sounds from across the Caribbean, South America, Asia and Africa to produce a unique blend of jazz music that effortlessly taps into a variety of emotions. Influenced by a range of jazz, soul, folk, blues and world music, Keith Waithe expertly incorporates sounds and vocal gymnastics reminiscent of the rainforests of his native Guyana with hypnotic effect. In Keith's own words, he has "shifted from being merely a vehicle for music to drawing on influences that span from the creativity of my ancestors to that of current culture in both composing and arranging.”

Having toured and performed extensively at countless festivals and venues including Glastonbury, Ealing Jazz Festival, Ronnie Scott’s, Jazz Café and PizzaExpress Live, The Macusi Players are able to read the feeling of the crowd as well as they are able to influence it. Seamlessly fluctuating between the mellow, the sensuous and the celebratory, unique and empowered performances are the norm for The Macusi Players.
