Sending Special Students Back to School Children's Clinics in Tucson

For the fifth year in a row, the Children's Clinics in Tucson helped hundreds of low-income kids get ready for school. With help from several corporate sponsors and donors, they handed out backpacks full of school supplies to some 400 kids--from preschool through high school--with various healthcare needs. Older kids received spiral notebooks, pocket folders, pens, pencils, colored pencils and highlighters.

The little ones received a spiral notebooks, crayons, scissors, glue sticks and pencils. Free books were handed out by several organizations including Literacy Connects, Make Way for Books and Altrusa.

"The majority of families receiving services at the Clinic are low income and may not have the means to purchase basic school supplies like backpacks, pens and paper," said Anna Pereira, Children's Clinics Child Life & Volunteer Coordinator. "Back to School Day has grown over the years and more than 30 organizations were represented this year! It’s a great way for parents to learn about all the services available to them in our community."

DES was on hand to educate parents about various program offerings. DES staffers provided resources on programs in its Divisions.

"We have something we can share with them," said Sharon Pierson, AzEIP Community Engagement Liaison. "The families get a plethora of resources. Yes, they're already in developmental disability programs, but there are other [DES] programs that they're not necessarily connected with."
"The children, they get to feel 'normal,'" said Pierson. "They get their backpacks, and they're all among comrades of their own. They feel very comforted."
