63rd Annual Grammy Winner Predictions alexis barbosa // artwork by olivia gerhardt

The 63rd Annual Grammy Awards, an award show that artists and fans look forward to every year, will air on March 14, 2021. Here are some of my winner predictions for the six main categories.

Watching the Grammys is a similar experience that most people enjoy. People love to watch their favorites artists receive awards for their hard work.

The Annual Grammy Awards are something that music lovers and music makers would, in some instances, not dare miss. It is a night to appreciate and reminisce on the music industry's talent. There are currently 83 categories. Despite the 83 categories available, only six categories and winners usually cause commotion on social media and news outlets. These are my predictions for the six main categories.

The first potentially controversial category is Record of the Year. Artists, producers, mixers and engineers that worked on the nominated records are potential winners of this category. Record of the Year has nine nominees this year; “BLACK PARADE” (Beyoncé), “Colors” (Black Puma), “ROCKSTAR” (DaBaby and Roddy Rich), “Say So” (Doja Cat), “everything i wanted” (Billie Eilish), “Don’t Start Now” (Dua Lipa), “Circles” (Post Malone) and “Savage” (Megan Thee Stallion and Beyoncé).

I think this category will most likely be a win for Megan Thee Stallion and Beyoncé. Their song Savage went viral on social media app TikTok and was on the Billboard Hot 100 for seven consecutive weeks when it was first released. Keara Wilson, the creator of the original "Savage" TikTok dance, was featured on Megan Thee Stallion's Instagram, helping the song and dance go viral worldwide.

The next category is Album of the Year. This category has eight nominees; “Chilombo” (Jhené Aiko), “Black Pumas (Deluxe)” (Black Pumas), “Everyday Life” (Coldplay), “Djesse Vol. 3” (Jacob Collier), “Women In Music Pt. III” (HAIM), “Future Nostalgia” (Dua Lipa), “Hollywood’s Bleeding” (Post Malone) and “folklore” (Taylor Swift).

This category will most likely be a win for Post Malone. Post Malone has won a total of ten Billboard Music Awards and two American Music Awards. According to Spotify, Post Malone has over 42 million monthly listeners and has had over one billion streams of his songs “Sunflower," “Wow” and “Circles." Each of which appeared on “Hollywood’s Bleeding." If Post Malone wins this category, it will be his first Grammy win.

Next, Song of the Year may cause some commotion. To win this category, an artist must first have their song achieve prominence during the Eligibility Year (2020). This category has a total of eight nominees; “Black Parade,” “cardigan,” “The Box," “Circles," “Don’t Start Now," “If the World Was Ending," “everything i wanted” and “I Can’t Breathe."

Singer-songwriter Taylor Swift will most likely win this category. Swift’s surprise album “folklore” has had over 206 million streams on Spotify since its release date. As an artist, she has been on Billboard’s Artist 100 Chart for 338 weeks since the start of her career; additionally, her album “folklore” recently brought her back to number one for eight weeks. All 16 songs made it on the Billboard Hot 100.

Best New Artist is another controversial category this year. A category that every modern artist would consider to be the title of a lifetime. This year The Grammys have eight nominees for this category; Ingrid Andress, Phoebe Bridgers, Noah Cyrus, Doja Cat, Megan Thee Stallion, Chika, D Smoke and KAYTRANADA. The Grammy’s describe this category as “a category that recognizes an artist whose eligibility-year release(s) achieved a breakthrough into the public consciousness and notably impacted the musical landscape.”

I believe that this will be a win for either Doja Cat or Megan Thee Stallion. Both of them have had their music go viral on apps such as TikTok and Thriller. Both women encourage body positivity and sensuality to their female audience; both women have had multiple songs of theirs end up at number one on the Billboard Top 100 and Spotify’s Global Top 50. Doja Cat is known for her extremely versatile music and lyrics, while Megan Thee Stallion is known for her raunchy lyrics and confident vocals. Both are extremely talented in different ways.

Best Pop Vocal Album is a category that causes a little bit of angst among viewers. To be nominated for this category, artists must have at least 51% playing time of new pop vocal recordings. This year's nominees include “Changes'' (Justin Bieber), “Chromatica” (Lady Gaga), “Future Nostalgia” (Dua Lipa), “Fine Line” (Harry Styles) and “folklore” (Taylor Swift).

This category will most likely end up being a win for Harry Styles. Style’s album “Fine Line” was a huge success when it was released. Harry Style’s song “Watermelon Sugar” has over one billion streams on Spotify and his music video has over 178 million views. The album announcement caught the attention of almost every media outlet at its initial release date, and he was the first man to ever be on the cover of Vogue as of this year.

Best Rap Song is almost always a category that causes debate in the media, no matter who wins. Artists eligible to win this are those who produced singles or tracks only. This year the Grammy’s have six nominees; “Deep Reverence” (Big Sean and Nipsey Hussle), “BOP” (DaBaby), “WHATS POPPIN” (Jack Harlow), “The Bigger Picture” (Lil Baby), “Savage” (Megan Thee Stallion and Beyoncé) and “Dior” (Pop Smoke).

I believe that this category's winner will either be Megan Thee Stallion and Beyoncé or Pop Smoke. As mentioned earlier, Megan Thee Stallion has dominated charts all year round and continues to do so. She has proved to the industry that she deserves this award. However, Pop Smoke could also take this as a win. The saying "an artist is only appreciated after he is gone" may be valid to an extent, especially within the music industry. With his passing this last summer, his music has become mainstream amongst listeners. After Pop Smoke's death, his song "For The Night" on his studio album "Shoot For The Stars Aim For The Moon" appeared on the Billboard Hot 100 and Spotify's Global Top 50.

The 63rd Annual Grammy Awards will air live on March 14, 2021, and late night talk show host Trevor Lawrence will be hosting. The Grammy’s will air live from the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, CA, be sure not to miss it.
