ABOUT GLOBAL X

The Global Experiential (Global X) Learning Trip allows students to gain insight on diverse and inclusive by visiting Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa. This is a collaborative trip hosted by Institutional Diversity, Equity, Advocacy and Leadership (IDEAL) and International Student Affairs (ISA). All applications are due by January 21, 2019.

This experiential trip is designed through utilizing methods of the Social Change Model and Intergroup Dialogue to create action oriented inclusive leaders. IDEAL provides a comprehensive programming approach to develop identity exploration, provide an environment to have authentic conversations and understanding civility. Skilled diversity educators will accompany student participants to meet the following goals:

  • Students will discuss mechanisms to dismantle levels of oppression and stereotypes
  • Students will understand how to have authentic conversations in a brave environment
  • Students will use levels of critical thinking to untangle socialize behaviors
  • Students will develop recognition of how a person’s background can inform their own belief

TRIP REQUIREMENTS

The application process for the Global X Learning Trip is open to any Temple University matriculating student. This is designed as a 360 approach in educating prior to the trip, during the trip, and post the trip. All applications will be carefully reviewed for interview offers to discuss qualifications listed in the electronic application. The following are requirements established to select student participants:

  • Full or part time matriculating Temple University student enrolled in course of study
  • No probationary or outstanding student conduct violations
  • Full completion of the Global X application
  • Post trip debrief during Fall 2019
  • Initial payment of $600 non-refundable deposit by February 20, 2019
  • Final $600 installment by April 1, 2019
  • Availability to meet weekly on - Wednesdays at 3:00pm-4:15pm or 4:00pm-5:15pm, excluding university closures
  • Availability to present at the 2020 Inclusive Leadership Conference that will be held at Temple University

You are probably now wondering about more specifics and the cost associated with this experiential trip, and here is goes...

This is an inaugural trip being hosted by IDEAL and ISA in which we will be hosting 9-11 student participants with 3 diversity Facilitators. Locations in South Africa are subject to change without notice; however, we anticipate spending 3 days in Cape Town and 5 days in Johannesburg.

The amount each student will pay in total for this experiential trip is $1,200. The first deposit of $600 will be due on February 20, 2019 and the second $600 installment is due on April 1, 2019. The following is included as a part of this trip:

  • Roundtrip airfare
  • Roundtrip travel from Temple University to the airport
  • Select amount of meals while on the trip
  • Lodging for the total duration of trip
  • Journal and books to track and understand global experience
  • Entry to all educational sites in South Africa

WHAT'S NOT INCLUDED:

  • Passport fees
  • Spending money
  • Visas and traveling fees
  • Immunization
  • Checked baggage and luggage
  • 2 nights of dinner

2020 CONFERENCE PRESENTATION

The Inclusive Leadership Conference is hosted annually at Temple University campus. Campus Philly and Temple University host a one-day leadership conference during the spring semester for ALL Philadelphia-area college students. The Inclusive Leadership Conference strives to build a better Philadelphia by giving college students from around the region the chance to enhance their leadership knowledge and skills through presentations, workshops, dialogues, and panels on topics related to inclusive leadership and social change. This year’s conference will focus on how one can find, advocate, and teach others to find their voice.

As the Global X Learning Trip is a 360 social justice journey, participants on the trip will be automatically selected to present a presentation on the social justice and inclusivity while utilizing core methods learned through the experiential trip. The date for the Inclusive Leadership Conference 2020 is scheduled for February 8, 2020. *All students attending the trip are expected to be present.
