Isham Update November 2018

Welcome Back

A warm welcome back to you all after what, I hope, was an enjoyable break with some gorgeous Autumn sunshine. We are in for a jam packed half term as we look forward to the build up to Christmas. Year 2s were very excited to receive their scripts for this year's Nativity and our Choir are busy preparing a bank of Christmas songs for the Isham Christmas Tree Festival. We are definitely in for a busy few weeks but, by the end of it, we should all be well and truly in the Christmas spirit.

Becky Hawke, Deputy Head

Harvest Festival and Cake Sale

Thank you to everyone who came and supported our Harvest Festival in church and the sale in school afterwards. We raised £163 which will be donated to The Daylight Centre in Wellingborough charity. Our Cake Sale also raised £132.60 for Macmillan Cancer Research, so another huge thank you to everyone involved.

Values Families Update

A huge well done to Sycamore Family, who are this term's winners of the 'Values' Trophy! Later this term they will be enjoying a movie afternoon, complete with popcorn, as their reward.

Before half term, we took the whole school to the Glebe Field for a nature filled 'Values' afternoon where the children worked with their families to create art from nature. It was a lovely afternoon and we felt very proud of our children and how they worked together, and supported each other to create their art work. Here are a selection of pictures from the afternoon; a few more are also on our website - www.ishamprimary.org.uk

International Outdoor Classroom Day

We will be continuing to take learning outside of the classroom this term in support of International Classroom Day on 1st November. There is a growing concern that children do not spend enough time outside each day, so we are hoping to help by taking some of our lessons outside. Please check out this powerful YouTube clip for the inspiration behind the day. 'Free the Kids - Dirt is Good!'

Online Educational Resources

This term we will be introducing the children to two new online educational resources that will be used alongside homework to help boost the children's spellings (Spelling Shed) and times table knowledge (Times Tables Rockstars). More detailed information will be emailed out next week so please keep an eye out for this.

Parent Survey

Thank you to everyone who returned their surveys. The data is currently being analysed and the results, and any subsequent action plan, will be sent out in the next few weeks. Many thanks for your continued support of Isham School.

Armistice Day 2018

On Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th November, St Peter's Church in Isham will be hosting a WW1 Armistice Centenary Exhibition and service. The exhibition will include: displays, photos, reference books, information about the war and wartime documents, to name a few, as well as exhibits from our own school children and young church members.

The exhibition is open on Saturday from 10am to 5pm and on Sunday from 10am to 4pm. There will be a service of Remembrance at 9 o'clock on Sunday.

Internet Safety Evening

Wednesday 28th November, 6-7pm

This month we will be holding our regular Internet Safety Evening in school. The internet is amazing. Children can play, learn, create and connect - opening up a whole world of exciting possibilities. But with the digital world changing all the time, we need to make sure we are keeping our children safe.

There are a number of dangers children face online, including the likelihood of cyberbullying, possible exposure to inappropriate content and vulnerability to online predators. Additionally, children who aren’t educated about the internet are more likely to get malware infections or share personal information online.

These dangers can have serious consequences, ranging from computer infections and identity theft to emotional and psychological damage. As a parent, it’s important for you to understand the risks and dangers posed by the internet, and how to best guide your children through them.

Our Internet Safety Evening aims to provide you with the right knowledge and tools so that you are able to keep your child safe in our ever changing world. It is not just aimed at parents of older children, as it is hugely beneficial to have a greater understanding of the dangers before your children become involved in social media and online gaming. Also, if you have previously attended one of our sessions, we do encourage you to attend again; the online world is constantly changing with new apps and games coming out all the time.

We cannot stress enough how important it is to fully understand the risks that your children face every time they go online. It is heartbreaking to hear the ever increasing stories of children, as young as seven, falling victim to online predators in our local area.

Please join us and help keep all our children safe!

Christmas Tree Festival

We hope many of you will support the Isham Christmas Tree Festival on Saturday 24th November. Our very own choir will be performing in St Peter's Church at 2 o'clock and all the children will be helping to decorate our tree for the festival. Alongside the festival, FOIS are also organising a Christmas Fair in school so, as well as getting into the Christmas spirit, you will also be able to do some Christmas shopping or just take some time to relax with some refreshments.

Admissions 2019 Reminder

For those of you with children who will be 4 between 1st September 2018 and 31st August 2019, our Open Hours for the 2019 intake are shown below. Please confirm your attendance by email or by calling 01536723956 and speaking to Sue Wood or Susanna Hogan.

Open Hours run from 11am-12pm and the remaining dates are:

  • Tuesday 20th November 2018
  • Friday 11th January 2019

The invite is for the full hour. You will have chance to hear a little about our school, meet the team, have a look around and ask any questions. The Exec-Head Teacher will also talk through the admissions process and how to apply to us - slightly different given our Academy status and our VA heritage.

The hour is intended for parents only and, whilst we don't seek to be awkward, we feel it would be easier for you to come without children in tow. That said, if it's impossible, we do understand.

The closing date for applications is 15th January 2019 (5pm)
