Happy 2019!

I hope all of you enjoyed your time out of the office and that you are eager to see what we can all accomplish together this Spring. Jamie and I enjoyed our time in the Outer Banks and the 2.5 weeks away were exactly what we needed. I haven’t had that long of a vacation since I began my career and I am so thankful to JMU for this commitment to all of us and our need for a break at the end of the semester.

Since returning to campus, I have had the opportunity to attend Assessment 101 and also work with Jim, Josh and Marsha to review all of the initiatives and reserve requests that were submitted for next year’s budget. We will be finalizing these prioritized lists and sharing them with Directors and Associate Directors and eventually the whole Division. It’s important to me that we communicate this information with everyone so you all can know how and why we are making these decisions.

Additionally, we will be asking Directors to work with their entire teams to develop 5-year plans for future initiative and reserve requests. I believe it is essential that we think strategically about our needs and utilize thoughtful and robust assessment in developing these requests. I am excited to see what all of you will develop for future requests and I appreciate the work by the Counseling Center in setting the tone and model for what these 5-year plans can look like during their recent retreat.

Thanks to all of you for your continued efforts and dedication to our students and know that I continue to be excited about where we have been and more importantly, where we are going.

Office of Disability Services: Disability Awareness Week 2019

Celebrating JMU’s 10th Annual Disability Awareness Week.

This March, the Office of Disability Services (ODS) will celebrate JMU’s 10th Annual Disability Awareness Week. This event promotes inclusion, engagement, and knowledge of disability as a both a topic and lived experience through a keynote event and a variety of other experiential learning opportunities for students, staff, faculty and community members. These experiences are often crafted in collaboration with other campus departments. Previous campus partners include the Center for Multicultural Student Services (CMSS), Dining Services, Talent Development, the Center for Faculty Innovation (CFI), University Recreation (UREC), the Counseling Center (CC), JMU Libraries and others.

This year, ODS has collaborated with the Center for Inclusive Music Engagement to bring Dr. Alex Lubet to campus to serve as the keynote speaker for Disability Awareness Week. Dr. Lubet is a composer, multi-instrumentalist, researcher, teaching awards recipient and professor at the University of Minnesota. His specialties include music composition, performance, popular culture, disability studies, bioethics, and Jewish and American studies. Dr. Lubet is credited with pioneering the field of disability studies in music. He has a plethora of knowledge and insight to share, so be sure to attend one or all of his events and performances!

In previous years, Disability Awareness Week included experiences such as an ODS open house, a cooking demonstration focusing on how to create a healthy meal without utilizing the top eight food allergens accompanied by a free meal sample and recipe for all participants, a resource display in Carrier Library, adapted sports showcase, and Creating Accessible Materials in Microsoft Office (CAMMO) training for faculty and staff. This year, ODS will host a variety of events–some similar to those from past years and others newly developed. There is certainly something for everyone!

Updates

Here's what's happening in our areas.

University Health Center (UHC)

International Travel Consultation. The University Health Center’s International Travel Consultation is available for students and for faculty and staff who are traveling on JMU sponsored trips. It includes a medical consultation specific to your travel itinerary, information on limiting disease risks, recommended or required vaccinations, and prescriptions for travel-related medications. There is a $20 fee for the consultation, not including any additional charges for immunizations or travel-related medications. Faculty and staff call (540) 568-6178, option 2 to schedule an appointment. There are also helpful videos and other links on the UHC’s website—check them out!

Orientation (O-Team)

T.J. Stafford. T.J. Stafford is the new Operations Manager. He oversees the operations within Orientation Office. This includes the recruitment, hiring, training, and supervision of the Orientation Operation Assistants; managing the check-in process and logistics for Orientation programming; and ensuring quality customer service for all new students and families. T.J. comes to JMU from Bridgewater College where he was an Area Coordinator in Residence Life for more than 3 years. He completed his undergraduate degree in Political Science from Ferrum College and is originally from Wytheville, Virginia.

DaNae Peterson. DaNae Peterson is serving as the Interim Part-Time Fiscal and Administrative Manager. DaNae will be taking over Debbie Pine’s responsibilities by managing all aspects of the Orientation budgets and fixed assets, overseeing the Orientation administrative needs, and providing support to the director. DaNae is a proud JMU alum who has worked in various customer service and administrative roles. Previously with Rosetta Stone as a Customer Care Representative and Trainer, DaNae also serves in a volunteer capacity as the Executive Administrator for Divine Unity Community Church, as well as a Graduate Advisor for the JMU Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Incorporated. DaNae and her husband Jumar live in Harrisonburg with their two beautiful daughters.

University Unions (UU)

John Skelly. John Skelly is teaming up with Jeremy Hawkins as the Assistant Coordinator in Off-Campus Living.

Lexi Swinimer. Lexi Swinimer has joined the Student Activities and Involvement team as the Coordinator for University Program Board.

Joyce Bentz. Joyce Bentz has accepted the position as Assistant Director for Conference Services. She has been a valuable asset to the Conference Services area for 18 years. We are excited to see what the future holds for Joyce and Conference Services!

Available positions. We still are in the hiring process of filling positions in SAIL as the Assistant Coordinator for Organizational Development—assuming Joyce’s former role in Conference Services—and a part-time position in the Finance area. Visit info.jmu.edu for more information.

Office of Residence Life (ORL)

Garrett Suhr. Garrett Suhr joined the Residence Life team in January as the Village Area Director. Garrett grew up in Roanoke. He has a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree from Cairn University near Philadelphia. More recently, Garrett had been working in Residence Life at Biola University in California.

Jon Strine. Business Operations is pleased to announce that Jon Strine will be joining our team as the Assistant Director of Facilities. Fortunately, his relocation wasn’t difficult: he only had to switch offices in our department from his position of Area Director, which is where he had been for 10 years. We look forward to benefiting from Jon’s experiences and we appreciate his willingness to straddle both positions during the transition.

Ryan Silver. Ryan Silver joined the ORL staff as the Housing Operations Technician in January. Ryan is a JMU alumna of the Class of 2014. She previously worked in Housing and Residence Life at George Mason University and is happy to be back at JMU.

Tripp Purks. Tripp Purks joined the ORL staff as the Assistant Director for Student Learning Initiatives in November. Tripp is a JMU alumnus of the Class of 2007. He previously worked in Orientation at Baylor University. We are thrilled to have Tripp on our team.

Career and Academic Planning (CAP)

Jennifer Rupert. Jennifer Rupert is changing positions in CAP after being selected to serve as our new Internship Coordinator. Congratulations to Jennifer as she takes on this new role!

Office of Student Accountability and Restorative Practices (OSARP)

Robby Smith. We are excited to celebrate the appointment of Robby Smith—the current Coordinator of Substance Education—to the position of Assistant Director of Restorative Practices as of January 25. We look forward to his leadership at this critical part of our office.

Jill Wade. Conversely, we offer a sad farewell to Jill Wade who has served as our Office Manager for over 6 years. We are endlessly grateful for the time, skills, dedication and spirit Jill has given to OSARP. Starting in February, Jill will be working in the Dean’s office.

University Recreation (UREC)

Rick Orebaugh. Rick Orebaugh, UREC Maintenance Manager since 1996, announced his retirement from JMU and UREC effective January 31. During his time at UREC, Rick had been responsible for pool and building maintenance. Rick retired after 30 years at JMU to focus on family and his hobbies. Rick was a key member of the UREC team; his focus on excellent building operations was instrumental in the sustained success of UREC in serving the JMU community for the last 22+ years. Rick was recognized for his innovative creations of the old trolley system for the heavy punching bags in the original building as well as an apparatus for rolling up the boxing hand wraps once cleaned. Rick is known to his former students as someone who taught life skills during their time working alongside him conducting building maintenance. Rick is known to his colleagues across campus as someone with a very high standard of excellence, who maintains extensive historical records of building systems and equipment purchases. Rick and his wife Sue Ann have two children, Matthew and Emily (husband Collin), and two grandchildren, Avery and Sayven. Rick plans to spend more time working alongside Matthew, blacksmithing knives and pursuing acting roles (he was previously cast in period movies Lincoln & Gods and Generals) to show off his signature beard. UREC celebrated Rick’s accomplishments on January 31 from 1 – 3 p.m. in the UREC Club Room 220.

Mentorship Through Exercise. Mentorship Through Exercise is a UREC program that provides JMU students the opportunity to have a positive mentor-mentee relationship with faculty/staff outside of the formal classroom setting. UREC will send monthly newsletters to each pair with upcoming activities and programs to get involved in as well as discussion topics to be used in your conversations.

Student Affairs Diversity Council

Meet your Diversity Council. The Student Affairs Diversity Council meets monthly to discuss university and departmental diversity initiatives to then be shared throughout the division. If you have questions or ideas to share, contact one of its members: Marsha Mays-Bernard and Valerie Schoolcraft (co-chairs), Traci Renee Ballou-Broadnax, Kate Bergey, Nick Dietrich, Sasha Griffith, Sandra Gulliver, Jason Jones, Chervon Moore, Jon-Mark Olivier, Angela Ritchie, Josh Shulruff, Reginald Stroble, Jordan Todd and Carolyn Wallace.

Student Activities and Involvement (SA&I)

Judy Marshall. Congratulations to Judy Marshall on her retirement! Judy began working on campus in 1975 and we thank her for her years of service to James Madison University. Maya Angelou said, “I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” It is certainly difficult to remember everything Judy did over the five decades in which she served JMU. Most notable are her contributions to the evolution of the Student Success program and creation of the Student Success Center. These hallmarks of JMU serve as lasting legacies of Judy’s impact at the university. As Ms. Angelou suggests, Judy will be remembered even more dearly for how she made us all feel. Her happy and exuberant personality has left an indelible mark on generations of JMU faculty, staff and students. For all of these reasons—and many more—she will be greatly missed!

Career and Academic Planning

Unpaid Internship Scholarship application. The scholarship application for unpaid internships is now open. It reimburses students for rent, food and other costs associated with an unpaid internship. Applications are due April 12. Visit the CAP website to apply.

Office of Student Accountability and Restorative Practices (OSARP)

OSARP to host colleagues from William and Mary. OSARP will be hosting colleagues from William and Mary on February 11 who wish to learn about implementing restorative practices in a higher education and conduct setting.

Counseling Center

HOME Group. We have a new group counseling program coming to JMU this spring 2019 semester! HOME Group is a safe space for students who are far away from the familiarity of their home countries. The group welcomes international students, students who have spent much of their lives outside of the U.S., and/or students whose immediate family are currently residing in another country. The group will provide an open environment for these students to explore and understand what “home” means to them in the past, present and future. This group is an ideal space for students to share their unique experiences, insight and support with others. For more information, visit the HOME Group article or contact Karl Fua.

Community Service-Learning (CS-L)

Community Coordinating Council. In October CS-L launched the Community Coordinating Council to ensure the maintenance and development of high quality local and regional partnerships with non-profit, government and educational partners. The council has over 30 members with representatives from a variety of departments in Student Affairs, Academic Affairs and other JMU divisions. After several productive fall meetings, the group will begin work in the spring to gather feedback from community partners on their perceptions of working with JMU. Community Service-Learning staff is in the process of identifying information that has already been collected to avoid taxing community partners with redundant requests. Professional Development grant funding. New SAPs are eligible to apply for grant funding for a professional development experience (books, webinars, conference fees, etc.) This is in an effort to encourage and support growth in New SAPs’ positions or in another area of interest. Rich MacDonald. Rich MacDonald, Assistant Director for Information Technology, graduated in December with an MBA in Information Security from JMU.

Kristina Blyer. Kristina Blyer completed the American College Health Association (ACHA) Leadership Institute and in December received her Certification as a College Health and Wellness Professional.

First annual Talent Show. New SAPs finished off a great semester with the first annual Talent Show. Career and Academic Planning (CAP)

Class of 2017 Career Outcomes. In December 2018, National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) released their national and regional statistics on first destination pursuits for the Class of 2017 on graduates for both undergraduate and graduate degrees. Once again, JMU ranked top-tier when compared with universities both at the nationwide and regional levels. This included comparisons to large-scale, public, and Carnegie Class M1 institutions. The charts below illustrate these comparisons and what we know about 86% of Bachelor’s Level graduates and 79% of Master’s Level graduates for the Class of 2017.

JMU showcased the highest percentage of graduates that were either employed, continuing education, or involved in career-related endeavors; the highest full-time employment rate, and lowest unemployed rate. Kaitlin Pomerleau at the NIRSA Marketing Institute in New Orleans. Kaitlin Pomerleau presented “Work Smarter Not Harder: Using Media Analytics to Drive Your Social Media Strategies” at the NIRSA Marketing Institute in New Orleans.

Community Service-Learning (CS-L)

NASPA’s Lead Initiative on Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement (Lead Initiative). The Lead Initiative comprises a network of NASPA member colleges and universities committed to encouraging and highlighting the work of student affairs in making civic learning and democratic engagement a part of every student’s college education. CSL and the Madison Center for Civic Engagement applied and JMU was accepted. Jamie Williams will serve as the JMU representative.

Alternative Winter Break. In December, a team of 10 went to Tennessee on the Alternative Winter Break. They worked with organizations that serve individuals who experience homelessness. In the mornings, the team partnered with Nashville Rescue Mission to help prepare and distribute meals, making the shelter a comfortable environment for growth. In the afternoons, they partnered with Open Table Nashville to help with various projects ranging from an urban immersion project and special service projects (laundry, organizing donations, cleaning up camps).

Alternative Spring Break speaker. JMU visiting scholar Kevin Powell facilitated a powerful discussion with Alternative Spring Break leaders on January 14. Kevin helped students reflect on their identity and its relationship to power and privilege with regard to their race, gender, sexual orientation, class, ability, and status through cultural sharing, storytelling and thoughtful activities.

Gulf-South Summit Conference presenters. Jamie Williams and Carah Whaley have been accepted to present at the Gulf-South Summit conference in Texas this upcoming April.

Ezra Lee Shulruff. Ezra Lee Shulruff was born 8 lbs. 11 oz. and 18.5 in. Ezra was born on December 13, 2018 to Josh Shulruff—Assistant Director for Alternative Break Programs—and Jaime Lee—instructor in Communication, Sciences and Disorders.

Julie Slifer and George Merryman. Julie Slifer—Coordinator of Operations—and JMU alumnus George Merryman announced their engagement. They are looking forward to a summer 2020 wedding.

Massanutten Escape Room. The Clinical Operations Team Leaders participated in the Massanutten Escape Room and demonstrated excellent teamwork by escaping with 6 minutes left!

A new home for Copper. Kristina Blyer’s family adopted a new canine family member on December 4, 2018. Copper is a rescue that was adopted from Anicira. Visit Anicira’s website for other dogs who are in need of good homes.

Jackie Hieber in Eastern Mennonite University’s Beauty and the Beast. Jackie Hieber (Assistant Director for Sexual Violence Prevention & Survivor Advocacy in The Well) will be performing in EMU’s musical production of Beauty and the Beast from March 22 - 24 and March 28 - 30 as an ensemble member.
