From The Principal

I would like to welcome new and existing families to the 2019 school year and extend a special welcome to the year 7 students and their families. The new students seem to be settling into their classes and really enjoying high school. I would like to thank all the parents and guardians who have taken the time to attend IEP meetings with teachers. Your input into your child’s education program is highly valued and you are welcome to contact your child’s teacher during the term to discuss their progress. We hold assembly in week 10 of each term and classes will be open after each assembly for parents and guardians to visit to view student’s work and meet staff. We will send out a reminder closer to the time.

Armadale Education Support Centre is a positive behaviour support (PBS) school and our mission is to encourage growth, respect for others and create opportunities for all our students in a safe and caring environment. We explicitly teach positive behaviour and social skills whilst providing a quality curriculum to prepare students for life beyond school. Students are taught appropriate behaviour skills in the same way that we teach academic skills in the classroom. Students earn tokens for showing appropriate behaviour in the classroom and around the school. The tokens have a value like money. The tokens are labelled Growth, Respect and Opportunity and each class has a sign on the wall that tells students what the tokens are for. We hope that parents will support the school and encourage these behaviours at home and in the community.

Students can exchange the tokens they have earned for items from the class rewards shop. Items may include store gift cards or other things students have told their teachers they would like to buy. Students can also buy a sausage in a bun at our Wednesday recess sausage sizzle for 5 tokens or pay $2. Please contact the class teacher if you would like any further information.

The Year 7s have had an exciting start to the Year. We spent the first few days getting to know each other, places around the school and other staff members. Over the weeks, we have started working on our ASDAN Digital Portfolio’s ready to include all work that we will be doing throughout the year. The Year 7s will be completing New Horizons as well as Stepping Stones this year. In Stepping Stones, we are going around the world! Last week, we visited Italy. In groups, we had to build a mini version of the Leaning Tower of Pisa with plastic cups. It was incredibly challenging but we managed to achieve it! On Friday, we cooked pasta with mushrooms, ham and leek in a creamy sauce. This week we are visiting France. We’ll be attempting to make the Eiffel Tower from aluminium tin foil and for cooking – we’re making savoury croissant and sweet crepes. As a class, we discussed what we’d be selling for Market Day as part of our Enterprise Program. The class collectively put ideas together and we’ve decided on Lavender Putty, Dream Catchers and Artisan Chocolates. Keep an eye out for our products that are coming soon!.

A heartfelt welcome to all our returning Year 8 students and their families. I trust you all had a lovely break and your children are ready for the school year ahead. It was certainly thrilling to see all the spirited and vibrant young minds in action ready to start the new school year. I am looking forward for a great year of learning and partnership. It was pleasing to see many parents and carers attending IEP meeting to discuss various education, behavioural and social needs for their children. As always the IEP meetings were very interactive filled with suggestions and ideas to ensure our students are given the best education possible. Thank you again for all parents and carers for taking time to attend IEP meetings. This year our Year 8 curriculum mainly focuses on ASDAN Transition Challenge and Stepping Stone. In addition, more hands-on activities will be in cooperated through Art, Team Building, Enterprise and Dance. Overall, we have had a busy start to the term with successful outcomes. We hope our programs will aspire our students to reach their personal best besides providing them with the time, opportunity and information for a successful year ahead. Thank you to all parents and carers again for providing appropriate stationeries and uniform, and making the start of the year as a well-organised and positive one.

MS3A- Mr Lush

MS3A has started strongly this year, largely due to having the same students, staff and classroom as last year. Mr Lush is the teacher for core subjects such as Math's & English. We are learning about managing our personal finances as well as World War 1 history. As Mr Lush teaches sport to all the middle school classes we have other teachers coming in to teach other subjects. Mr McGoldrick teaches us music and social skills and Mrs Gillett has been teaching about the environment to help us work towards our ASDAN Key Steps Certificates. We have been learning protective behaviors from Mrs Pritchard and Mrs Cope is our art teacher who has been teaching us to pain like the famous Spanish artist Pablo Picasso. Our class is also enjoying the weekly cooking sessions with Miss Ash. Our recipes so far have been creamy chicken and mushroom with fettuccine and chicken parmigiana with chips. These recipes have been a real hit!

SS2- Ms Jesionek

Welcome back to a new school year! 2019, as you know, has been a very busy start for all students and staff alike. All SS2 students have settled into their class and are very much aware of the class routine. Currently our students are engaged in a variety of different programs. We have started with enthusiasm our ASDAN programs: Developing Communication Skills, Work Awareness and My Future Choices. The students are also enrolled in the Community Service Program which has been set up to help Western Australian secondary school students understand the value of giving service to the community. The program gives students the opportunity to be involved in activities that help others. As part of our Enterprise, we have started preparation for the Armadale ESC Market Day which will take place in term 2 this year. During this event we are going to present our most popular wheat bags, shopping bags, aprons, candles and bath bombs. The year 11 and 12 students have already completed 3 weeks of Work Experience in a variety of places. We have found this program gives students the chance to try out different jobs and also gives them a taste of workplace environments. In the past many students have gained part time jobs from their placements, and traineeships. I would like to take the opportunity to thank parents for their participation in the IEP meetings these last couple of weeks. We greatly appreciate your support as it helps to bring the best out of your child. Thank you.

On Monday 25th and Tuesday 26th February the senior students travelled to Astley Street River Park to plant seedlings under the guidance of Ross Wylie of the Armadale-Gosnells Landcare Volunteer Group. The students planted both dry land seedlings as well as seedlings that needed to be planted in the water of the creek bed. Both days were hot and quite humid but the students worked hard and well on their volunteer tasks. Some students donned Wellington boots and risked getting leeches on themselves to complete the water planting. Those doing the dry planting had to dig holes in hard, very dry ground and occasionally dodge ants. To have breaks from the hard work the students drank plenty of cold rainwater made available, climbed trees and went for a walk along the creek. The students behaved admirably and worked conscientiously and received high praise from Ross and their teachers. Well done to you all!
