Five Alabama Improvement Initiatives By: Cecilia Bullard

The Alabama Math, Science, and Technology Initiative is the Alabama Department of Education's Initiative to improve the teaching skills of math and science throughout the state of Alabama. Its mission is to provide all students in Grade K-12 with the knowledge and skills necessary for success in the workforce and/or postsecondary studies.

  • Nearly half of all Alabama schools are official AMSTI schools. It is responsible for training approximately 20,000 teachers and administrators and for providing service to over 40,000 students statewide.

In my OPINION, AMSTI is a very effective program that gives students the opportunity to increase their knowledge and confidence in their abilities to understand math, science, and technology. Not all schools can obtain the resources that AMSTI provides to students and that makes AMSTI important.

The Alabama Reading Initiative is a statewide K-12 initiative committed to supporting the development of high-quality instruction that will prepare all students with the literacy skills needed to meet or exceed grade-level standards.

Goal and mission

The goal is to significantly improve reading instruction and ultimately achieve 100%literacy among Alabama public school students. The Alabama Department of Education built ARI in a mission to provide the standards, resources, and support that local education agencies need to ensure that all students graduate high school prepared for college and/or the workforce.

In my opinion, this program is very important because it is a step in improving the literacy rate of high school graduates and the overall literacy rate of not just the state, but the nation. It provides students with the resources that they could not provide themselves and resources that not every school can afford.

The Alabama Learning Exchange is designed to index and share many types of educational materials and information through a time-saving, one-stop resource for educators, parents and students.

ALEX is made possible through generous resources provided by the Verizon Foundation, the Alabama Supercomputer Authority, the office of Technology Initiatives, and the Federal Government.

In my opinion, it is a helpful tool for teachers and provides them access to use or compare different session plans. This is very helpful resource for new educators. I love that it brings the community together in helping students thrive in and outside the classroom.

The Alabama Connecting Classrooms, Educators, and Students Statewide provides equal access to high-quality instruction to an infrastructure that delivers quality learning opportunities. Provides access to advanced diploma courses, Advanced Placement, and dual enrollment/dual credit classes.

Goal and mission

The goal is to create equity through additional educational offerings for all Alabama public high school students. The mission is to provide an infrastructure that delivers the equitable, quality learning opportunities provided for all citizens.

In my opinion, ACCESS opens doors to students that cannot obtain certain classes at their high school. It provides equal opportunity to all students to obtain a quality education.

The Alabama Virtual Library provides all students, teachers, and citizens of the State of Alabama with online access to essential library and information resources.

Equity - every student, teacher and citizen will have online access to current core of information.

Economy - statewide licenses offer significant savings.

Excellence - appropriate, accurate/reliable, scholarly, up-to-date information.

In my opinion, AVL is a very valuable and essential program for the State of Alabama. It provides Alabama citizens the access to multitudes of reading resources and idata systems., many citizens would not be able to provide such resources for themselves.
