1 Peter A Bible Study

1 Peter 1:3-7 NIV

"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade–kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that your faith–of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire–may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed."

Explanation of faith: 1 Peter 1:8-9 NIV - "Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls."

1 Peter 1:13-16 NIV

In light of our new birth and coming inheritance, and in light of the suffering and trials around you...

"Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed. As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: 'Be holy, because I am holy.'"

1 Peter 1:22 NIV

"Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the heart."

1 Peter 2:1-3 NIV

"Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good."

Read 1 Peter 2:5. Where do you fit?

1 Peter 2:7-8 NIV

"Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, 'The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone,' and, 'A stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall.' They stumble because they disobey the message–which is also what they were destined for.'"

What does this mean? See Philippians 3:19 and Romans 11:32.

1 Peter 2:9-10 NIV

Your New Identity

"But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy."

What have you been chosen for?

1 Peter 2:13 - 4:2 - Lessons in Submission

1 Peter 2:21 NIV

"To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps."

Who should we submit to?

  • All authorities (1 Peter 2:13)
  • Masters (bosses - good and bad) (1 Peter 2:18)
  • Husbands (1 Peter 3:1)
  • Wives (1 Peter 3:7)
  • Jesus (1 Peter 3:15)
Submission in the face of suffering is not always easy. We are called to "arm" ourselves with this attitude of submission (1 Peter 4:1).
Live with the end in sight. Read 1 Peter 4:7-11. How should we live in light of Jesus' return?

In light of all the trials and suffering you experience, how should you live?

Be alert (1 Peter 1:13; 5:8-9)

  • Practice spiritual warfare.
  • Fight the right battle.
  • Prepare you minds for action.

Be holy (1 Peter 1:15-17, 22; 2:1-3; 4:2-3)

  • God said it. You can do it.

Be submissive (1 Peter 2:13 - 4:2, 8-11, 19; 5:2-7)
