Today in 2E and 2/1S!
This morning I visited 2/1S and 2E for the morning session. During this session students worked on visual literacy, oral reading, reading comprehension, sight words, spelling rules - suffixes, vowels and blends, sizzling starts, simple and compound sentences, conjunctions and paragraphing.
I read with Sophie, Millie, Abi and Zara. I also read with Iggy, Archie, Maddie and Ella. Wow; you are all magnificent readers with developing expression and first rate comprehension. Well done! Thank you to Miss English and Ms Shapero for allowing me to join in this morning inside your vibrant and engaging classrooms.
Year Three have been experimenting with expressionism.
Students studied images of roosters and used view finders to focus on specific areas; eg legs, beak, tail, feathers. Artwork was scattered with powdered pigment and then sprayed with water. Students used ink wash to paint their rooster and bamboo pens dipped in black ink to highlight areas.
'It was very experimental as the ink wash bled into the other colours. Some students enjoyed the process and final product and others found it challenging not to be in total control of the paint. It was an interesting experiment with expressionism.' Mrs Plasto
Congratulations Year Three; this is beautiful work. Thank you once more to our amazing Art Teacher Mrs Plasto.
Fire Truck and Police in North Turramurra
You may have noticed the fire truck and Police in North Turramurra, just outside the front gate this morning. I was alerted to this development very early on by parents and staff before school. I went and spoke to the officers at the scene and was told there was '...no need to do anything other than let the morning continue as per usual.'
The officers told me that there had been some tampering with the ATM overnight. They said it looked like chlorine had been poured into the machine via a bottle and hose. Please contact Police if you know anything about this matter.
Zone Swimming Carnival
Last Monday March 6th, 38 TNPS students competed the Hornsby Zone Swimming Carnival held at the Hornsby Swimming Pool.
Fred C, Piper F, Harrison W, Sophia A, Keanu W and Kieran P all qualified for the 50m Freestyle finals with Kieran placing 3rd, Harrison 4th, Piper 6th and Fred, Sophia, and Keanu all placing 7th.
Kieran also placed 3rd in the Senior 50m Butterfly, 4th in the Senior 50m Backstroke and 4th in the Open 100m Freestyle.
Jamie F placed 7th in the Senior 50m Butterfly and both Junior Relay teams performed exceptionally well with the Junior Girls team of Sophia A, Haidee U, Georgie L and Alice M placing 6th and the Junior Boys team of Keanu W, Fred C, Harrison W and Jack M placing 7th.
Kieran also qualified to represent the Hornsby Zone at the Area Carnival on Monday 20th March.
The students were great representatives for Turramurra North and demonstrated exceptional sportsmanship and school spirit. Well done TNPS! Special thanks to Miss Fagan for her work in coordinating all things swimming at TNPS in 2017.
Chemically Treated and High Pressure Cleaned
You may have read the information in last week's newsletter about a confirmed case of 'hand foot and mouth disease' among the TNPS student population. I am also aware of other cases of this disease among our student population and outside of our student population in North Turramurra this last week. As discussed in last week's newsletter, this is not the more serious 'foot and mouth' disease. Please read last week's newsletter for further details and a link to a NSW Health Fact Sheet about 'hand, foot and mouth.'
I wrote last week confirming that the toilets had been disinfected. I would like to advise the community that the toilets have also been chemically treated and high pressure cleaned this weekend just passed.

Tell Them From Me survey - 2017
This term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.
More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au
The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help improve how they do things at school.
Please be assured that the survey is confidential. It is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 20 March and 7 April. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary.
A consent form and FAQs for parents/carers about the survey was sent home with students. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form to school by Friday 17th March 2017 to class teachers. Copies of the form and FAQs are available from: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents.
Thank you to the families who have donated old towels to the art room. If you have any old towels of any size or condition, we are happily accepting more. Year 4 has been looking at the works of artist John Olsen. The Art Gallery of NSW currently has a comprehensive exhibition of his works. Years 4, 5 and 6 are creating a collaborative drawing piece on one of the sliding glass doors at the back of Stobo Studio, if you are walking by take a look, it is really taking shape. This is the final week for year 6 FEAST. Please remind your child of their day for glazing their ceramic pieces.
