Suicide By: Carter

I think a way to prevent suicide among middle schoolers is to try to eliminate cyberbullying.

The rate of suicide in middle schoolers doubled in 7 years from the year 2007 to 2014. In that time, the increased use of social media and smartphones has led to an increase in cyberbullying among middle schoolers. That made kids get depression and commit suicide.

According to studies, 87 percent of teenagers have been involved in cyberbullying and 34 percent said they have been cyberbullied themselves. Most middle schoolers have access to internet and social media on their phones which makes it easy to cyberbully other kids at any time. Constant cyberbullying can make a victim become overwhelmed and possibly suicidal.

Cyberbullying is very difficult to prevent because it is not out in the open. Most parents of the kids that experience cyberbullying don't even know it is happening.

There are some signs that a kid is being cyberbullied. They can be sad or angry when using the internet, stop hanging out with their friends, not want to go to school or school activities, have mood swings, or a sudden drop in their grades at school. In order to prevent cyberbullying from going to far, parents and teachers need to pay more attention to changes in kids actions and moods.

In conclusion, I think parents should monitor their kids use of the internet and social media more. They should also, talk to their kids about cyberbullying and if they are feeling depressed or suicidal. I think all schools should teach kids about the harm of cyberbullying.
