MMHS Counseling Newsletter april 2021

Awww, spring is here and we are in our final term at MMHS. Counselors will be working this month preparing seniors for graduation and beyond. Make sure to check out the senior timeline included below, as our graduation plans have changed since the beginning of the year. Next month there will be a virtual Senior Awards Program, including awards our seniors have received and scholarships from colleges and local businesses.

April 16th Graduation list posted *This list will be updated weekly on Fridays

April 17th Prom- 8:00-10:00 pm

April 30th All make-up and outside credit is due. *Honors and High Honors will be calculated – any detention hours above 10 must be cleared for consideration.

May 20th Senior check-out begins- Seniors will get clearance cards outside counseling office during lunch. Pick up Honors & CTE Cords. (3.5 = Honors 3.7= High Honors)

2022 Concerto/Aria Information: For students wishing to perform their Concerto or Aria in concert with the MMHS Chamber Orchestra & Band: -Applications for Concerto/Aria are due on Friday, September 3rd 2021. -Auditions will be held on Tuesday, September 7th 2021. -Concert will be held on Wednesday, January 19th 2022. Speak to Miss K or Mr. Rymer for further details.

Upcoming Scholarships

April is the month for many of our local scholarships for seniors. Please look these over, and if you qualify, make sure to apply!

April 1st Keys to Success- Various scholarships to UVU, MTECH, Paul Mitchell, Snow College, and Nightingale College. Apply through website.

April 2nd Utah Jazz- For every Jazz win during the 2020-21 season, the Utah Jazz are providing a full, four-year scholarship to an underrepresented student of color enrolling as a freshman for the 2021-22 school year.

April 13th Live wElle Scholarship- In memory of Elle. A scholarship to provide hope for a local senior seeking further education and who has displayed toughness, resiliency, determination, love and genuine care for others.

April 14th Spanish Fork Kiwanis Scholarship- This scholarship is based on financial need, leadership, community service, and academic achievement. Four senior students living in Spanish Fork will receive scholarships as well as students who are members in good standing of the Key Club.

April 15th Utah’s Energy Workforce Scholarship Program- Over the past three years, OED has partnered with Chevron to advance Utah’s energy workforce and provide more than $92,000 in scholarships to high school seniors and first-year college students pursuing a science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) field of study or trade certification at a Utah institution of higher learning. This includes: Five $4,000 scholarships for students attending a Utah college or university, Five $2,000 scholarships for students attending a Utah technical college

April 15th The Strong Scholarship- Team Strong, a Complete Shooter franchise owned and operated by Mark and Edris Strong, is excited to offer a $1,000 scholarship to be applied to the recipient’s higher education costs. One scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior from Nebo School District. Students interested in applying for The Strong Scholarship must meet the following requirements: Will be attending an accredited college or trade school program after graduating from a Nebo school district high school Must have participated in ANY high school sport (this scholarship is not limited to basketball players), Must NOT have been offered a collegiate athletic scholarship

April 15th Bryson Strong Foundation Scholarship- The recipient of the scholarship will be: Graduating senior from MMHS. Active in any extracurricular school-sponsored event. 3.30 GPA or higher. Demonstrates the ability to be “BRYSON STRONG” by persevering through tough times with humility, love, and a smile on their face.

April 15th NEBO CU Scholarship- Senior who is a member or becomes a member of Nebo Credit Union.

April 15th Elmo C. Keck Scholarship, 2021 Excellence in Music. Membership in choir during high school. Love for music.

April 15th Grant and Genevieve Gardner- Senior, majoring in education.

April 15th Mapleton’s Promise Scholarship- For a senior who resides in Mapleton with a 2.5 GPA or higher. This scholarship was created by Reid and Elaine Carlson to help a student further their education. It is encouraged also for those students who are planning on going into a trade to apply for this scholarship.

April 15th Spanish Fork Rotary Club & Spanish Fork/Salem Chamber of Commerce- Senior with goals of higher education and career training.

April 15th 2021 Golf Scholarship from SF Rotary Club and SF/Salem Chamber of Commerce

April 15th Springville/Mapleton Chamber of Commerce- Senior students from Mapleton or Springville who have been employed or are currently employed.

April 15th Sierra Bonita Senior Leadership Scholarship- Senior who has previously attended Sierra Bonita and has been involved in community, school and church activities.

April 16th Grant and Genevive Gardner- Senior, majoring in education.

April 16th Park Elementary- The Park Leadership Scholarship is for any senior who previously attended Park Elementary and have been proactively involved in school, church and community activities. The recipient must have attended Park Elementary for at least one year and have plans to attend college in the fall.

April 20th Jiffy Lube “Your Turn Behind the Wheel” Scholarship- For Utah students 15-17 years old enrolled in Driver's Ed during the 2020-21 school year.

April 20th Nebo Title VI Indian Education Scholarship- A Native American, senior student with at least a 2.5 GPA.

April 24th Mountain America Credit Union Scholarship- Applicants or family members must be members of Mountain America Credit Union.

April 30th Betsy Wiscombe Piano Educational Scholarship- This college scholarship is available to high school seniors with a background in piano. Preference will be given to students living in Utah.

April 30th National Tongan American Scholarship- Scholarship is for undergraduate students of Tongan background, and must be a Utah resident.

April 30th PMI Northern Utah Chapter Scholarship- PMI, Project Management Institute, is the international non-profit association for advancing the profession of project management. The PMI Northern Utah Chapter is offering three scholarships, $2000, $1000, and $500, to outstanding Utah students who demonstrate an interest in project management. To apply for and be considered for a scholarship, please create and upload a 5 minute or less YouTube video telling a story about a project you have been involved in.

Mtech Registration will take place on April 20th. You can start the process online at portal.mtec.edu. Program admission requirements may be met by taking MTECH's assessment test in the Testing Center or by bringing a copy of external testing or alternative documentation to the Testing Center for approval. Find the prerequisites for program online at mtec.edu/programs.

Seal of Biliteracy: Our students have the opportunity to earn the Seal of Biliteracy, the award will be given to students who demonstrate proficiency in English and in one or more world languages (including Navajo or Ute). Seniors will need to turn in applications into the counseling office or to Kassidy Daley (kassidy.daley@nebo.edu) before May 1st. Seniors needing to take the take the AAPPL or ASLFAI exams will need to fill this google form out as soon possible.
