Holidays

Every once in awhile me and my family get together with our relatives from Sweden and celebrate an important holiday for both of us, Easter. On Easter Sunday they would celebrate Easter the way we do it. Then their holiday is Easter Monday. We celebrated their holiday the way they do it. They brought lots of foods and deserts, along with gifts. Basically on the Swedish holiday Easter Monday we would eat, open presents, and relax while enjoying the outdoors.

Other holidays include:

  • Ascension Day- Commemorates the ascension of jesus
  • National Day- Commemorates the election of King Gustav Vasa in 1523
  • Midsummer Eve- it is a lunch party that never ends. People sing, dance, drink and play games.

Cultural Characteristics

Food- Swedish meatballs are very popular and personally one of my favorite foods ever because there is so much flavor and there is an amazing jam on it.

  • Snaps and Glogg (very traditional)
  • Cinnamon Buns
  • Raggmunk

Traditions-

  • Each year during Easter children dress as witches and know on the doors of houses and wish a happy easter.
  • Walpurgis- people gather around a large bonfire and sing the winter away

My Family: Currently I have cousins living in sweden right now. There father is the very first relative of our family to come to America. He came here in 1984 to get a better education so he can get the job he wanted. He is now a very successful man in Sweden and is living the high life.

What being Swedish means to me- To me being Swedish means being very kind and respectful. Swedes are very friendly but also very tough, and I consider myself to be the same way. We are very proud of who we are and we don't show it off. I am happy to be a Swede.
