This Week at Wheeler February 13, 2020

We are grateful to have welcomed so many families, students, alumni, and friends of the Wheeler community to celebrate the incredible work of Dr. Arun Singh and our amazing students. Thank you for making the night so memorable. If you were unable to attend or simply want to experience our event for a second time, please enjoy a full recording from the evening through the link below.

Vol. 1 Issue 20
I volunteer at the Refugee Dream Center (RDC) in Providence, a non-profit that helps refugees in Providence with various forms of practical assistance not covered by existing governmental programs. This fall, I helped to teach English to adult refugees from various countries. One day, a woman from Syria names Saadia arrived with stacks of mail that she had been saving because she could not read it. Some items were nearly a year old. What scared me most, though, were the letters about healthcare, Social Security, and the Rhode Island Works cash assistance program. I did not know how these programs worked, but I knew they were important, and the letters might contain information that could not wait. My supervisor at the RDC knew more about programs like these, and together we helped to translate the important letters into Arabic, which I am learning, and to advise her about what to do with them.

Jane Josefowicz ’21 is one of ten winners to receive a $5,000 RepMyCity Challenge microgrant through United Way and Pop-Tarts. Jane’s proposal for a Refugee Translation Assistance App was inspired by her work at the Refugee Dream Center (also a new Cityside collaborator) in Providence, RI. Read how Jane describes her project below.

This Week

This Week at Wheeler: We grappled with some of the world's greatest challenges, and thankfully had our Model UN students here to solve them. Our Cityside students interviewed Providence's own "creature monster robot alien group," and discovered how performance art could make our community a better place. We tapped our toes to the sounds of Middle and Upper School Jazz during their Winter performances, and our Intro to Engineering class dared to test the strength of their own designs and construction — we're STILL holding our breath! We're getting very excited to celebrate this year's Lifetime Achievement Award recipients during Learning Differences Awareness Weeks and our Mind your p's & q's celebration. Our talented Middle School writers released their first edition of FONT into the world. We have lots of new awards and honors to share! Take your time looking through each section, there is so much to be excited about. For Valentine's Day, we're taking the advice of our librarians (don't we always?), and are going on a date with a good book. Thank you to our WSPA Parent Volunteers for making all our Faculty and Staff feel extra special yesterday, what a great day!
