Spiritual Warfare Basics

Ephesians 6:10-18

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.

The Spiritual Landscape

Where is God? How big is God?

Psalm 24:1 - The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it;
Isaiah 40:22 - He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in.
Philippians 2:9-11 - Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Where is the enemy? How big is the enemy?

Ezekiel 28:1-19 - Satan is a created being, a fallen angel.

Isaiah 14:12-15 - Due to his pride, Satan was cast down.

Revelation 20:10 - Satan’s end is being bound in the lake of fire forever.

It is not an even match between the Creator God and the fallen angel, Satan. Recognize the awesome greatness and power of God versus the tiny size and domain of the enemy.

Why does the enemy have so much power in our world?

We give the enemy power through our sin. He gains authority as we give him authority when we rebel against God.

Satan knows that he has been overcome (Revelation 12:11). But, his goal is to take as many people down with him as possible.

What did Jesus do?

Colossians 2:13-15

When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.

Jesus has conquered Satan and sin through the cross. He has regained the authority that humans gave up through their sin.

Why do we still experience the terrible influence of Satan in our world today?

Hebrews 2:8

In putting everything under him, God left nothing that is not subject to him. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to him.

Satan knows that he has lost. Yet, he still gains a measure of authority through people’s choices to sin. His goal is to take as many people with him to destruction.

What is Jesus’ answer to our battle with the enemy today?

the church

Matthew 16:18-19

And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.
The church is called to use her God-given keys of authority to bind up Satan and his demonic forces throughout the world, to proclaim the victory of Jesus and to loose the Holy Spirit’s power.

God waits for the church to activate her authority on the earth.

How can the church activate God’s authority on the earth and push the enemy back?

Use the weapons of spiritual warfare

The Weapons of Spiritual Warfare

Worship

Psalms 149:6 - May the praise of God be in their mouths and a double-edged sword in their hands.

Thanksgiving

2 Chronicles 20:21-22 - After consulting the people, Jehoshaphat appointed men to sing to the Lord and to praise him for the splendor of his holiness as they went out at the head of the army, saying:

“Give thanks to the Lord, for his love endures forever.”

As they began to sing and praise, the Lord set ambushes against the men of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir who were invading Judah, and they were defeated.

Unity

John 17:23 - I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.
Matthew 18:20 - For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them.”

Bible

Hebrews 4:12 - For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

Declaration of Testimony

Revelation 12:11 - They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.

Intercession

Matthew 16:19 - I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.
Ephesians 6:18 - And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.

The main activity of spiritual warfare is:

Resist the enemy (James 4:7).

Declare the greatness of God in your situation (Acts 16:25-26).
