Talking Point

One of the great wonders of our God is His generosity. In the words of the hymn, "He giveth and giveth and giveth again." His giving is with liberality. God is no penny pincher.

Have you ever wondered why?

I've considered this question for years. I've looked at my failures and faults and those of others--merit is not likely behind God's reasoning. I could give a more theological reply and suggest that it is in God's nature to be generous, and God cannot act inconsistently with His nature. As true as that may be, I'm not sure that really answers the question.

What I've come to conclude is God is generous because it makes Him happy. God is a supremely joyful being and generosity brings God great joy. And a quick review of the Scriptures will lead to the conclusion God is eagerly looking for opportunities to be generous so we can be happy together (Duet 28:47; Isaiah 25:6). I'm not suggesting this is the only reason God is generous, but I think it's somewhere near the top of His list.

One thing I am certain of--God wants us to be generous as well. May our generosity flow from His wealth and goodness, and give us great pleasure!

“Seven days you shall celebrate a feast to the LORD your God in the place which the LORD chooses, because the LORD your God will bless you in all your produce and in all the work of your hands, so that you will be altogether joyful. (Dt 16:15).
