Environment/Where It Lives: Habitat and Range. Wolves can thrive in a diversity of habitats from the tundra to woodlands, forests, grasslands and deserts. Today, gray wolves have populations in Alaska, northern Michigan, northern Wisconsin, western Montana, northern Idaho, northeast Oregon and the Yellowstone area of Wyoming.

Hunting Skills: While wolves will eat hares and other small prey, their preferred targets are ungulates, large hoofed animals such as deer and elk. Individual packs will specialize in hunting specific prey species. While most often that is elk, caribou, deer and moose, it can also be bison, muskoxen, Dall sheep or even salmon.

Speed: 31 – 37 mph

Life Span: The life spans of wild wolves vary dramatically. Although the average lifespan is between 6 and 8 years, many will die sooner, and some can reach 13. Wolves in captivity can live up to 17 years

Body Features:

How Does The Wolf Adapt: Wolves have many adaptations that enable them to survive in their environments, such as unusually large paws, thick fur coats and keen senses. Wolves are also able to adapt to almost any habitat, with the notable exceptions of deserts and tropical rain forests.

Method Of Reproduction: Wolves reproduce when the alpha male and female of a pack mate and bear offspring. Once this occurs, all members of the pack, which is a group of family members and often the older offspring of the mating pair, take care of the pups.
