Summer Strings Camp 2019 Presented by Suzuki Violin School of Santa Barbara

A fun way to get ready for the new school year! This camp focuses on ensemble and group playing. Younger students have an art class, while the older students will have music theory and history.

Santa Barbara First United Methodist Church offers an inspiring location to play music!
DATE: August 12-16 (M-F), 2019
  • Instruments: Violin, Viola, Cello, Classical Guitar
  • Ages: 5-16
  • Camp Time: 9AM-1:30PM (see Curriculum below for more info); 12pm pickup for books I-III unless previous arrangement is made; Friday 9-12PM with a full student concert at 11AM
  • Cost (including registration): Books I-III, $220 (9AM-12AM); and $295 for Books IV and up
  • Where: Santa Barbara First Methodist Church, 305 E. Anapamu Street (at Garden St. ).
  • Teachers: David and Valerie Malvinni, additional teachers possible if large enrollment

Sample Curriculum for the 9AM-12PM camp time:

Books 1-3: Beginner to Intermediate players
  • 9AM: group playing, technique, scales
  • 10-15 minute snack break
  • 10AM: art class
  • 10 minute snack break (BYO)
  • 11AM: beginner ensemble (orchestral playing)*
  • 12PM: dismissal
  • *N.B. We will aim to have the material challenging enough for the Book 3 players. Easier versions will be made available for the beginner Book 1-2 players.
Books 4 and above: Advancing players
  • 9AM: group playing, technique, scales
  • 10-15 minute snack break
  • 10AM: music theory and history class
  • 10 minute break
  • 11AM: advanced chamber ensemble (duos, trios, etc. TBD)
  • 12PM: dismissal; ONLY if staying for optional advanced , lunch (BYO) will be 12-12:30PM
  • 12:30-1:30PM: advanced string orchestra (book III possibility with directors permission)
Advanced Optional:

12:30-1:30PM: Advanced String Orchestra; depending on enrollment, we will have quartets, trios, duos. This will also be the only time where the guitars will work as a unified group, so it is strongly recommended for all guitarists to sign up for the Optional part of the camp.
