Buckingham (USA) Takes Silver in Medemblik, Bronze in Santander

The US Sailing Team’s Charlie Buckingham (Newport Beach, Calif.) took home bronze in the Men's Laser class at the World Cup Series Final (June 4-11, 2017) in Santander, Spain. Narrowly missing out on the podium were Men’s 470 duo Stu McNay (Providence, R.I.) and David Hughes (Miami, Fla.), who finished 4th.

For Buckingham, the medal-winning performance in Spain was his second in as many top-level events, having taken home silver from the 2017 Delta Lloyd Regatta in Medemblik, The Netherlands.

“I’m unsure about if it’s ‘momentum,’ but things seemed to come together well at both events,” said Buckingham, who finished just three points out of gold in Spain. “In such a small fleet, every point was really valuable. The top three were really close the whole time. This made the racing really intense and the podium spots were up for grabs all the way until the final downwind [leg] of the medal race.”

Oakcliff Triple Crown Series Underway

The Oakcliff Triple Crown Series, a groundbreaking plan to reward athletes for their hard work and provide significant financial resources to assist them in achieving Olympic success, is now fully underway with the completion of the first qualifier event in early June.

The Triple Crown Series will consist of up to six regattas to be held annually in Oyster Bay, New York, and will offer both international and American athletes in five of the ten Olympic Classes a chance to win prize grants. Sailors in the 49er, 49erFX, Men’s 470, Women’s 470 and Nacra 17s will race for $100,000 in each class for a total of $500,000 annually. There will also be opportunities to win additional bonuses.

The grants are to be used by the winning sailors to fund expenses associated with Olympic campaigns. The series represents an unprecedented effort to relieve some of the fundraising challenges that typically burden U.S. Olympic hopefuls while simultaneously providing new opportunities to hone high-performance racing skills.

Next Event: Oakcliff Sailing will be hosting the 470 Olympic Sailing U.S. National Championships June 24 & 25. This event will also serve as the second qualifier for the Oakcliff Triple Crown Series. Spots are still open, so if you're a committed Olympic hopeful or just starting out in an Olympic class, don't miss out on this incredible opportunity!
