In an era of constant change, Applied Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Services, or ARIES, continues to increase opportunities for engagement and help students, faculty and local companies soar. We are excited to share this update on our Quarter 3 activity, and we are pleased to invite you – students, staff, faculty and community partners – to get involved.

In provincial and federal grants

ARIES continues to grow year over year with high impact projects in healthcare, social innovation, transportation and energy sectors – which means greater opportunities for community engagement. By Q3 of fiscal year 2020/21, we are proud to have received $2,178,000 in provincial and federal grants and awards, an increase of 33% compared to the year prior.

In industry cash contributions

Comprising mainly of local SMEs along with some national and international companies, our 29 industry partners contributed $501,000 towards applied research activities that support student employment and help actualize ideas and products.

Centennial was my first choice [for a project partner] … [Working with the students] was as if we were working with engineers with years of industry experience. It was a win-win situation.

— Saeid Samiezadeh, CEO and Co-founder of Ortho Biomed

Did you know?

80% of industry cash for Applied Research projects came from small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Both local companies and student researchers benefit greatly from college applied research activities, with many of our partner companies hiring our students after graduation.

Paid student researchers

Centennial is among Canada’s top three colleges for paid student research, and during a year of precarious employment, ARIES managed to increase the number of student researchers employed across our projects by 4%. Our 363 paid researchers contributed 76,024 hours of expertise working directly with industry partners.

This was a good experience because it provided an environment that I could actually face after college.

— Suhaan Vyas, Student Researcher

Faculty members engaged

When Centennial faculty engage in applied research, students are engaged too. In Q3, ARIES engaged 44 faculty members as Principal Investigators across research projects that solve industry problems in healthcare, aviation, energy and more. ARIES also provides funding for faculty- and staff-led internal research projects through our Applied Research Innovation Fund (ARIF) program.

The [ARIES] project has helped create a knowledge base that I can rely on … These are all real-life things that I’m doing through [ARIES] that I can bring into the classroom and say, ‘Look at what we’re doing.’ It’s not just this ‘potential company that is doing this,’ it’s here at Centennial College.
— Brendan Chapman, Professor and Principal Investigator

“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”

– Helen Keller

Applied Research at Centennial encompasses a partnership approach, and our team has benefited considerably from the continued extended efforts of teaching staff, department chairs and Deans, who consistently mentor students, provide expertise and technical direction on projects. We extend a hearty "THANK YOU" to all of our collaborators at Centennial!
