Quote:

"Many people regard him as the world's greatest dramatist and the finest poet England has ever produced" ( Lander). In 1594 to 1608 he was ranked number one on the ranking for play writers.Based on the number of plays and performances was why he was so popular.

Paraphrase

He is one of the most famous and world known poets and dramatists.

My Ideas:

I know now that he is seen as one of the greatest poets and play writers of all time. I wonder how many plays William Shakespeare has written in a life time.

"William Shakespeare was born in the small market town of Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564, the third of eight children. The register of Holy Trinity, the parish church in Stratford, records his baptism on April 26."( Lander) He is said to be born on April 23 because he was baptized on April 26 and baby's were usually at this time baptized 3 days after their birth. He was upon 8 children.

Quote:

"...in 1582 when Shakespeare, at the age of eighteen, hastily married Anne Hathaway, the twenty-six-year-old daughter of a farmer from the nearby village of Shottery; she presented him with a daughter, named Susanna, approximately five months later. In 1585, the couple also became the parents of twins, Hamnet and Judith." (Shakespeare) Shakespeare married Anne at eighteen. They had a daughter the year they got married and three years later had twins.

Paraphrase:

Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway at 18. They had a daughter who they named Susana and in 1585 they had twins named Hamlet and Judith.

My Ideas:

This fits with what I know because I knew he married Anne Hathaway and they had a daughter and twins. I wonder if William did plays when he was young and had children.

Quote:

"During his last eight years, Shakespeare was the sole author of only three plays— Cymbeline, The Tempest, and The Winter’s Tale. He collaborated with John Fletcher, another English dramatist, in writing three more plays. In the past, some scholars argued that The Tempest, written about 1610, was Shakespeare’s last play." ( Lander) Shakespeare only did three play's before he died. His last play was the Tempest in 1610.

Paraphrase:

In Shakespeare's last 8 years of his life he wrote only three plays. The Tempest was Shakespeare's last play.

My Ideas:

This is fit with what I know because I know Shakespeare's last plays he collaborated with John fletcher. I wonder if Shakespeare's last plays were as popular as his other famous plays.

Quote:

"It is thought that by about 1610, Shakespeare was spending a good deal more time in Stratford than in London. In 1611, he and others were preoccupied with defending their Stratford properties in the Court of Chancery against other claimants." ( The Facts on File) Shakespeare spent most of his time in Stratford because he had to defend his property in court in 1611. He did this because Stratford meant a lot to him.

Paraphrase:

In 1610 Shakespeare spent more time in Stratford where he was born than in London where he lived and did his plays. In 1611 he had to defend his Stratford property.

My Ideas:

This fits with what I know because in his late life before he died he spent most of his time in Stratford where he was born than in London where he did most of his plays. I wonder if Stratford meant a lot to Shakespeare.

Quote:

"Legend has it that he died on April 23, the same day and month as his birth in 1564. John Ward (1629–81), vicar of Stratford from 1662 to 1681, noted that, according to Stratford legend, the playwrights "Shakespeare, Drayton, and Ben Jonson had a merry meeting, and it seems, drank too hard, for Shakespeare died of a feavour there contracted."(The Facts on File) Legend says he died on April 23 because he drank too hard. April 23 was the same date as his birthday.

Paraphrase:

Legend says that Shakespeare could have died on his birthday from drinking too hard and died of a favor there contracted.

My Ideas:

This fits what I know because it has Shakespeare's death and how he died on his birthday. I wonder if the legend is actually true that he died on his birthday.

Quote:

"Shakespeare wrote at least 38 plays, two major narrative poems, a sequence of sonnets, and several short poems. His works have been translated into a remarkable number of languages, and his plays are performed throughout the world. His plays have been a vital part of the theater in the Western world since they were written about 400 years ago."(Lander paragraph 2) Most serious actors and actresses have said Shakespeare has been their biggest test of art. He has written many plays and many poems.

Paraphrase:

Shakespeare wrote over 38 plays. He has translated his work into his own languages. His plays have been performed through out the world ever since.

My Ideas:

This fits with what I know because I knew that Shakespeare made many plays and had some of his own language in his plays and poems. I also know he has been popular for many years.

Quote:

"James Burbage's theater was dismantled shortly after Christmas 1598 and rebuilt as the Globe Theatre. It was situated in an area of south London beside the Thames, Bankside, noted for its brothels and animal-baiting rings. Open-aired, almost circular, it witnessed performances of at the very least 17 of the greatest of Shakespeare's plays."( Facts on File) The Globe Theatre was one of Shakespeare's most successful theatre's he wrote plays in. It was built in London in 1598

Paraphrase:

James Burgage's theater was taken down in January of 1598 and was rebuilt as the Globe Theatre. The Globe Theatre had more than 17 of Shakespeare's greatest plays.

My Ideas:

It fits with what I know because I know the theatre was taken down and built as the Globe Theatre and it had William's best plays. I wonder if James Burgage's theatre wasn't taken down for Globe Theatre if William Shakespeare would be as successful.
