Attendance Matters!

ATTENDANCE: Call (425) 366-3500 or email our attendance clerk, Jamie Groshong, to report an absence. You must notify Serene Lake's attendance office or your teacher in order to get the absence excused. When students have unexcused absences, their families will receive a daily robocall at 6:00pm. Three unexcused absences generates an attendance support letter, our goal is to help families prior to becoming truant. A student is considered truant if they miss 7 or more unexcused days in a month or 10 or more unexcused days in a school year.

Vision and Hearing Screening

From the nurse

Vision and hearing screening happens September 30th and October 7th. Please have your child wear his prescribed glasses on screening days (and everyday) and avoid absences when possible.

Immunization records are available online. Parents can view and print their child’s immunization records at MyIR (My Immunization Record). Sign up at www.doh.wa.gov/YouandYourFamily/Immunization

The USDA has extended the waiver to continue the program through the 2021-2022 school year, which allows all students to have access to meals for free.

October IS Bullying Prevention Month.

The article from Psychology Today, “Is it Rude, is it Mean, or is it Bullying?”, written by Signe Whitson, helps us understand the difference between rude, mean, and bullying behavior. Whitson defines these behaviors as:

  • Rude = inadvertently saying or doing something that hurts someone else
  • Mean = purposefully saying or doing something to hurt someone once (or twice)
  • Bullying = intentionally aggressive behavior, repeated over time, that involves an imbalance of power

She writes, “Experts agree that bullying entails three key elements…Bullying may be physical, verbal, relational, or carried out via technology.” For more information see the article found at: https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/passive-aggressive-diaries/201211/is-it-rude-is-it-mean-or-is-it-bullying

Safety Matters

  • Always turn RIGHT out of the school entrance during Pick-up and Drop-off times.
  • When using the student drop off service, have students exit on the passenger side.
  • Do not park in the handicapped parking spaces unless you have a handicap permit.
  • Never leave your car unattended at the curb/drop off lane. (If you need to get out, find a parking space in the lot.)
  • Please help us by being aware of our crossing guards and students who are walking both in the morning and the afternoons. Please help us with this important safety issue.
  • The drop off loops in the front of the building are for buses only. No cars are allowed in the bus loops during school hours from 8:00AM to 4:00PM.

Just a reminder, the playfields and big toys are closed to the community during school hours (8:35AM to 3:45PM). We invite you back to campus after 3:45PM, when classes are dismissed and all students have left. There is no student supervision before 8:35AM or after dismissal, at which time parents take responsibility for their child’s safety.

Things Happen!

We realize that plans change. If for some reason your child needs to go home in a manner other than their normal mode of transportation, you must send in a note or call the office 425.366.3500 at least one hour before they are released. If we have not been notified of a change in transportation, we are required to send them home as per their established plan.

Get to know your PTSA Board!

PTSA provides support to teachers and administrators, and creates a caring and supportive atmosphere in the school. Every PTSA function is an opportunity to meet other parents, you also will be connected with a group of parents who share a common goal of improving the school for all of the children. At Serene Lake, the PTSA has always played an important part in making our school a better place! We are excited to announce the 2021-22 PTSA board.
