Oakfield News Issue 86 - 12th March 2021

Spreading the Oakfield love:

There are a number of things parents and carers can do for Oakfield to help more families find out about our wonderful school.

1. Review the school on sites like Google - powerful testimonials are important for telling people about the school and getting our website high up in search engines!

2. Follow us @OakfieldPrep on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and YouTube (links below)

3. Like, share and comment on our social media content and why not tag us in your own content including our hashtags #OakfieldPrep #OakfieldPrePrep #WorldOfOpportunity

4. When you speak to other families let them know about Oakfield and the wonderful things the children are getting up to!

5. Keep reading our weekly newsletter and share it with your nearest, your dearest and complete strangers too!

6. Email me at bgolden@oakfield.dulwich.sch.uk about ideas or initiatives you have that the school could get involved with - maybe it's a local community event we could partner with, maybe it's information or activities you'd like to hear about the Prep side, maybe it's a wholly new platform for communicating with our parents. Whatever it is we'd love to hear it!

As usual please log on to the Parent Portal and remind yourself of all the important updates and messages that have been posted this week.

Note from our Head

Dear Oakfield families,

It has been the greatest joy to see and hear our playgrounds, classrooms and corridors buzzing with activity again. I managed to see many of you on Monday morning as we returned to school, and it was thrilling, and has been thrilling, to see the excitement of the children as they see their friends again and resume their usual school life.

Both I and all the Oakfield staff are keeping a very careful watch on how all the children are adapting back into the normal school routine. Their strong character and resilience has shone through but we are conscious of the mental and emotional strain that the pandemic has placed on everyone.

Therefore, please feel reassured that the Oakfield community are looking out for each other, treating everyone with care and consideration, and greatly looking forward to the rest of term, here, in school once again.

Have wonderful weekends,

Moyra Thompson

OAKFIELD BIRTHDAYS

World Book Day Winners in Pre-Prep

There has been a buzz of excitement in my office, as the World Book Day Winners have received their stickers, certificates and prizes today! It was such a joy to reward the children for their great efforts in dressing up, making puppets, reading aloud, making props and sharing their favourite stories with us!

Congratulations to all who participated – we are very proud of you all.

Keep showing your creativity in all you do.

Wendy Nicholson

YEAR 5

Year 5 were thrilled to be back in school. We learned lots in Science lessons at home, but it was so fun to be able to get back to the practical side of things and experiment with the different elements of an electrical circuit!

YEAR 4

Drama

This is what the children said about the year 4 play "Ali Baba and the Bongo Bandits"

"I am very excited! We are against the clock but it is still fun. It will be great!" Sophia
" We have 2 weeks to rehearse this play and we are working together to make it happen" Sadie

Sport

In the lockdown, I have been (virtually) doing sports with an app called "The Conqueror" . You take part in different activities and win medals.

I completed 2 challenges: "The Inca Trail" and the "English Channel" Next, I am going to do the Mount Everest!

In the lockdown, I took part in a special activity. I run a certain distance and my app measured it. Every 5 miles, I planted a tree and when I finished this challenge, they gave me a certificate and a medal. I completed the "Inca Trail" and the "Mount Fuji".

If you want to complete these challenges, download the app "The Conqueror" and you will have lots of fun.

My next challenge is going to be "The Mount Everest"

YEAR 2

Year 2 were so delighted to be reunited with ALL their friends!

The children were so happy to be doing all the things they love about school, sitting and having lunch together, catching up with one another, enjoying outdoor games and playtime!

In Science the children had the opportunity to work with circuits. They had fun following the correct steps in order to make the lightbulb glow:

Do we have two wires with crocodile clips? Check!

Do we have a light bulb? Check!

Do we have a battery with two terminals? Check!

Great teamwork!

Here are the Year 2s singing Mingulay Boat Song, one of our Scottish songs that we learned on mute over lockdown and finally had the chance to sing together!

YEAR 1

We have loved having the children back this week and it is so nice to see them back with all of their friends. They have all settled back into the school routine well and seem very happy to be back!

UPPER FOUNDATION

Dear Parents/Carers,

We are just amazed by how well the children have settled back into the daily life and routines of school. They have loved being reunited with all of their friends and have thrown themselves into their learning with gusto! It almost feels as though no time has passed!

This week we have been learning about air travel and transport. We have loved making hot air balloons and thinking about what we would pack if we flew to different countries around the world- we have even made our own passports- not that we will be using them for a while!

In phonics this week, we have been learning the ‘are’ sound. We are also working on building sentences with ‘are’ words and key words, to consolidate the children’s learning. Please practise this at home.

In Maths, we have been reviewing our understanding of addition and subtraction and ordering numbers to 20, as well as formation and recognition, finding 1 or 2 more or less.

Next week, we will be focusing on the future of travel and changes in the way we travel for the good of the environment.

LOWER FOUNDATION

For Show and Tell this week the children in Lower Foundation bought in their wonderful masks that they made at home.

They used their loud, clear and expressive language to describe and talk about their amazing alien mask. In further detail they discussed the colours, features and techniques used.

We spoke about how to be a good audience and the children all demonstrated wonderful listening skills. Many questions were asked and lots of detailed responses were given.

Well done all (parents included!)

What a fun day we have had exploring our Oakfield Solar System! The children travelled from each classroom to conquer a space challenge! They built fruit rockets, made sand rockets and designed alien masks to name just a few....

The children listened well and followed instructions successfully. Well done everyone and we hope you enjoy your space treats!

We look forward to space dress up day, next week on the 17th, where more space fun will continue!
