MAROON MADE Volume 1, Issue 33 Spring Quarter Finale

University of Chicago athletic teams wrapped up their 2017-18 competition season with both the men's and women's tennis and outdoor track & field teams represented at their respective championships. Maroon Made will take a break for the summer and Volume 2 will resume with the Fall 2018 quarter!

MEN'S TEAM TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS
UChicago's senior class authored a third trip to the NCAA semifinals in their four years.

FINAL FOUR MAROONS

The Maroon Men's Tennis team pulled off the 5-2 upset over host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps to advance to their third Final Four in four seasons. UChicago would go on to fall to eventual NCAA runner-up Bowdoin in the national semifinal.

NCAA SINGLES/DOUBLES TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Maroon doubles team won their opening two matches on Thursday and Friday in the bracket of 16 to reach the national semifinals. They became only the second UChicago men's tennis duo ever to advance to the semifinals – the feat was previously accomplished by Erik Kerrigan and Ninan Kumar in 2017.

DOUBLES HISTORY

The duo of Tyler Raclin & Jeremy Yuan made it all the way to the semifinals in the NCAA Doubles Championships to earn All-American status along with singles' player Erik Kerrigan.

WOMEN'S TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS
Making its eighth appearance in the NCAA Division III Championship Quarterfinals, the University of Chicago women's tennis team concluded another stellar season with a 5-1 setback to top-ranked Emory University.

The Maroon women fell to top-ranked Emory but made theor eighth appearance in the NCAA Division III Quarterfinals to conclude another strong year for UChicago.

NCAA SINGLES/DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIPS
Claire Handa and Marjorie Antohi earned All-American status by winning their NCAA opening match in the doubles championship.

GRIND OUT WIN

The doubles pair of Claire Handa and Marjorie Antohi pulled out a three-set victory in their NCAA opener to clinch All-American status. Finishing their season record at 15-8, the pair fell in the quarterfinals.

NCAA Outdoor Championships
Senior Ade Ayoola earned her first-ever All-American finish with her eighth-place finish in the women's high jump.
Junior Nicole VacaGuzman broke her own school record in the 400 TWICE -- once in the prelims and again in the finals -- to earn All-American honors with her seventh-place finish.

ALL-AMERICAN FINISHES

Senior Ade Ayoola & junior Nicole VacaGuzman both earned All-American status with Top 8 finishes in their respective events to lead the UChicago track & field teams at the 2018 Outdoor National Meet in La Crosse, Wis.

Senior Khia Kurtenbach took ninth place in the 5,000 meters in a solid finish at the national meet.
Sophomore Alexandra Thompson was 10th overall in the high jump, also clearing a height of 1.68 meters, a season-best.
Sophomore Laura Darcey was 11th in the high jump, also clearing 1.68 meters, but had more misses early to place her behind Thompson and Ayoola.
Senior Nate Downey competed in the men's pole vault at nationals.
