Described as, ‘a beautiful, specialist home that puts people’s care needs first’, by Regional Director of Operations and Registered Manager Carla Middleton, Exemplar’s newest specialist care home Lakeview in Leigh, Wigan, has immediate bed availability and is open for referrals.

Providing specialist care for some of the community’s most vulnerable people, Lakeview specialises in providing care for people living with neuro-disabilities, brain injury, stroke, mental health conditions and dementia.

Nestled in the heart of the community on Ena Crescent, Lakeview looks on to a picturesque lake, and provides the perfect environment for providing specialist care in a beautiful setting.

Led by Carla Middleton, Lakeview’s care team and nurses are dedicated to providing excellent, high-quality care for their service users and are committed to delivering completely person-centred support as well as creating tailored care packages to suit individuals.

Carla brings a whole wealth of experience to the role at Lakeview, and with a long history of nursing, managing and commissioning homes, and is the perfect fit at the home.

Committed to delivering, high-quality care to everyone she cares for, Carla said:

“Lakeview is not only a beautiful home to live and work in, but it is a home that is committed to making every day better for our residents and is always working to ensure that each and every person that lives here is receiving the best possible care.
“We work with our service users’s family and friends to ensure that all of our care plans are tailored to the individual, are continually assessed, and are always working towards goals and ambitions.
“Not only is our nurse-led care high-quality, we have an activities team that is dedicated to working alongside our care teams to integrate therapeutic and meaningful activities into people’s lives and ensure that needs and wants are achieved.
“Since opening last Summer, Lakeview has already made a difference to people’s lives, and we now want to extend that care to even more people to benefit from our support."
Carla added: “As well as benefiting from beautiful surroundings, our home boasts a fantastic community hub. The hub is the perfect place for residents to enjoy an open and airy space, and make use of its private, accessible kitchen. The space is also used by families and friends and is a welcoming calming place for people to enjoy.
“The hub also welcomes members of the local community to come and use it completely free of charge for meetings and functions – which is a great way for Lakeview to connect with groups and people from the area.”

Lakeview's on-site psychiatrist, Dr Peter Marshall

Adding to Lakeview’s high-quality care team, qualified doctor and experience consultant psychiatrist, Dr Peter Marshall, works at the home as an on-site psychiatrist and runs a weekly clinic.

Peter specialises in the treatment and recovery of severe and treatment-resistant mental illness and works with Exemplar’s clinical teams across all of our homes and provides specialist support for residents who live with mental health conditions.

Working with clinical and care teams, Peter works to improve links between home, community and NHS stakeholders to provide consistent, time-sensitive care for Lakeview residents.

With a passion for delivering high-quality care, Carla, leads the Lakeview team to create a real positive environment for everyone to live and work in.

Since the home opened last summer, the care teams have already supported people on their positive care journeys:

When Patricia, who lives with severe anxiety and depression, moved to Lakeview in October after being in hospital for over a year, she was very isolated, didn’t want to speak to anyone and or do anything.

However, now thanks to the specialist care from the Lakeview team, Patricia talks to people in the lounge and dining areas, goes out for a coffee with the activities team and is becoming very sociable.

Because of a fear of water, Patricia hadn’t had a bath for six years, however, with the assistance and trust that has been built with her care team, she now regularly bathes and has broken down previous fears.

As one of Lakeview’s first service users to move in last summer, Sylvia, has made huge progressions in her life thanks to the dedicated care team at the home. Sylvia lives with a brain injury and has bi polar, and when Lakeview started caring for her she had very challenging behaviour and isolated herself.

Sylvia was unable to mobilise when she arrived at Lakeview and required the support of 2-3 team members to assist with mobilisation with the use of a hoist.

Now, seven months later, Sylvia is transformed and only requires the support of one care assistant and is walking independently with the use of her walking aid. She now regularly goes out to the local shops, enjoys socialising with others and takes part in activities at Lakeview.

Impressively, Sylvia is now assisting the Lakeview team in the interview process for new team members. This role sees her ask questions to the candidates and helps decide who is successful in getting the job. Not only does this give Sylvia a sense of pride, but also adds to Lakeview’s commitment to providing completely person-centred care for individuals.

Lakeview is committed to providing high-quality, specialist nurse-led care to as many people as possible, and referrals to the service are now open.

Lakeview's official opening: September 2018

Following a successful community day in July last year, where local residents were welcomed to enjoy afternoon tea and a preview of the home, Lakeview colleagues and Leigh stakeholders came together to celebrate the home’s official launch.

At the official opening of the home last September, the ribbon was cut by the Mayor of Wigan, who praised the Lakeview team. Madam Mayor, Councillor Sue Greensmith, said:

"I’m overwhelmed by how wonderful and homely Lakeview is, and it’s clear the team have worked incredibly hard to make this a really special place for people to live and work. This is a fantastic addition to the community in Leigh and I congratulate Exemplar on the inclusion of The Hub, which will be a great free resource.”
