Art Center Visit

Mastronauta Omegna

The art and cultural hub of Omegna since 2001, Mastronauta is an independent centre for cultural programming that fosters the growth and practice of artistic and creative activity through courses, workshops, exhibitions, artist residencies, events, festivals and alternative social experiences.

The Mastronauta building, that was the erstwhile FARO foundry, is a great example of the metamorphosis of staid industrial architecture into a structure that nourishes socio-cultural and artistic practices and energies, is open to all contemporary interpretation, and that provides the citizens of Omegna with a space for creative realisation and personal or collective research.

The visit is led by a member of Mastronauta, lasts about 30 minutes and includes:

  • Tour of the building, home to the erstwhile F.A.R.O. foundry, with a narrative of its history
  • Visit to the project room dedicated to the toys design project, Pups.it (mascot of Mastronauta)
  • A brief account of the history of Mastronauta
  • access to the art library
  • free wi-fi
  • Audio booth of the Industrial Soundscape project
  • help your self cafeteria

Suitable for all ages

Partecipation fee: Visitors can choose to make a donation

Meeting point: Vicolo Strona 8, 28887 OMEGNA VB

At the end of the tour, the screening room is open for visitors to watch a video of their choice between:

  • "Landina - en plein air painting experiences" – short film
  • Short animated films from the VideoFiabe Contest
  • Finalist films from the competitive film festival, Omegna.doc

It is possible to arrange a visit combining a workshop or a walk tour

The ‘Pups’ are an eclectic and fanciful collection of domestic objects inspired by the ‘kidult’ philosophy that took shape within Mastronauta and went on to conquer the design world beyond. They have been selected by prestigious international museums including MOMA, New York, the Museum of Decorative Arts and the Pompidou Center in Paris. In 2007, the project was included in the "New Italian Design" section curated by the Triennial Milano and exhibited in Instanbul (2010), Beijing and Nantou (2012), Bilbao, San Francisco and Santiago de Chile (2013), Cape Town and Guangzhou (2014).
We are in the process of setting up a room dedicated to the history of the former foundry F.A.R.O - with tools, moulds and images of small household items produced for children between 1945-1955. The construction of the building, currently home to Mastronauta, dates back to 1945 and is credited to Felice Mastromauro who intended to establish a business in the production of rags. The project was interrupted, the building remained unfinished for 2 years, without so much as doors and windows. It was subsequently acquired and completed by Remo Ruschetti, adapting the plans to the F.A.R.O foundry, which launched its business of production of household items, including miniature versions for children.
