Nikko World heritage shrines

Shinkyo (sacred bridge)
This is the Five-Story Pagoda, about 36 metres tall, located within the World Heritage listed Toshogu Shrine.

Although pictures were not permitted within the Taiyuin (mausoleum for Lord Iemitsu), the various temples outside, as well as the gates leading into the area, were ornate and very striking. The dragon shown here was on the ceiling of one of the gates.

The sakura were still in late bloom in Nikko

Even when the blossoms are at their end, there is still a beauty in seeing the pale pink petals fall gently to the ground, and carpet the forest floor like a soft pink snow.
