Ouray Fall Colors Trip Report - Tom Bol Photo Workshops

Ouray Fall Colors

Tom and I think Ouray is the best location for fall leaves in all of Colorado. Yellow aspen, russet Gambel Oak and deep green spruce create an array of vivd colors. This year our workshop started with peak color in the high country. First stop: Crystal Lake with Red Mountain in the background.

Crystal Lake

We started our first day on Red Mountain Pass. Crystal Lake is the perfect spot for reflection shots. Calm waters in the morning help create striking reflection shots all around the lake perimeter.

Crystal Lake

With perfectly calm water and sun on the surrounding aspen groves, the reflections in the water looked like Monet paintings

Great spots for macro shooting every day

Red Mountain Pass

The Million Dollar Highway aka Red Mountain Pass was spectacular with massive stands of aspen and mining relics dotted through the terrain.

Red Mountain to Silverton

We drove over the pass to Silverton to take in the Victorian era mining town and the orangish red aspens behind town.

County Road 5

We embraced atmospheric images for the next two days with plenty of fog and rain to help create moody images.

Historic fences and misty aspens

County Road 7

We waited for first light and the fog to lift to reveal Mount Sneffels at the end of County Road 7.

Dallas Divide and County Road 9

For our final morning we woke up early to photograph Dallas Divide in full sun. A final stop at the Double RL Ranch off county road 9, hugs all around and the workshop was over. Tom and I are already looking forward to returning in 2023!
