Community Connections

HARMONY CAREER EXPLORERS

Two Harmony Science Academy - Pflugerville graduating seniors were among the first at the school to go from high school students to life career explorers thanks to a new job shadowing initiative developed by the high school counselors.

Matthew G. and Trisha A. spent a day job-shadowing Chris Nelson, Texas Workforce Commission Chief Financial Officer. The student's day began with an exclusive tour of the Workforce Commission offices in Austin before settling in on budget meetings alongside Mr. Nelson. Although Matthew and Trisha were privy to various billion-dollar discussions, nothing left them more impressed than Mr. Nelson's ability to know the exact cost of every item TWC has, right down to the price of a single paper clip.

"During the job-shadowing experience, students follow the professional they are shadowing through his or her workday. They observe the rigors of the job, the company culture, and ask a lot of questions. We hope that this kind of on-site experience will help them make better choices for their future," said Mrs. Rahime Tunc, Campus Counselor.

INSPIRING YOUNG MINDS AT CAREER DAY

On March 12th, 2020, tiny firefighters, police officers, construction workers, veterinarians, and even a music d.j. walked the halls at Harmony School of Innovation. The elementary students came excitedly dressed, representing a profession for the school's annual career day.

Throughout the day, students heard from many different career professionals from a make-up artist, attorney, realtor, baker, software engineer to musicians, dancers, and nurses. Students also learned about the roles public servants hold in the Austin Police Department, the Austin Fire Department, and the Austin Animal Control. Students gained valuable life lessons about staying safe and asking for help from our community public servants.

"Thank you to our amazing presenters for volunteering their time to speak with our young students!" - Fabiana Montenegro, Harmony School of Innovation | Engagement Coordinator
