What Friendship Looks Like BY LOEY JONES-PERPICH AND RUBY TAYLOR

AJ AND ALIZA

AJ: Our friendship is having someone to talk to, and to hang out with in class.

Aliza: To go to the bathroom with for, like, 20 minutes during class, and then get yelled at, and then not do it anymore. And then get grounded from our Spanish class.

How long have you been friends?

Aliza: *laughter* 3 months? Four months?

AJ: No, no. We were friends at the end of last year, when we went to — did you hate me?

Aliza: No! I didn’t hate you, but I don't know if I'd go so far as to say we were friends.

AJ: Well, then it looks like we’ve only been friends for three or four months.

How’d you guys meet?

AJ: We were in dance body, and Aliza came up to me and said, “My name is Aliza and I'm also a freshman.”

VANESSA AND BEN

Vanessa: Someone that you can blab at, someone who will blab back at you. And you nobody won’t care.

How long have you known each other?

Vanessa: Since the beginning of the year, we’ve been friends ever since. Our friendship started through magic.

Ben: We met in math class.

What’re your favorite parts about each other?

Vanessa: That he looks like Papa Smurf in his beanie. That he can perfectly imitate the Sam House dance.

NATE AND WILL

Nate: Friendship. I’d say being there when your friend is in need, sticking up for them when they’re going through stuff.

Will: When they’re down and stuff is rough, you’re always there for them.

How long have you guys been friends?

Nate: Since elementary school. Fourth grade?

Will: When he moved from Boston he was in, what was it, my second or third grade class?

Nate: Yeah, it was second grade. Our second grade class is when we first met.

What are your favorite things about each other?

Nate: It seems like Will’s kind of different every day, you’re always going to have a new experience with Will. He’s going to keep you on your toes.

Will: I find him very attractive. He’s just always there for me.

CHLOE AND ABBEY

Chloe: I guess if someone’s your friend that’s someone that you trust.

Abbey: Yeah, or someone that you can just talk to and you don’t have to force it.

Chloe: Something where everything comes naturally when you’re with them.

What’s your friendship like?

Chloe: We do a lot of school projects together.

Abbey: Yeah, it’s a very academic friendship.

NED AND KYLE

Kyle: You’re not going to betray each other and hurt each other. You’re just going to be cool.

Ned: Somebody that will go out of their way to give you a hand.

How long have you guys been friends?

Kyle: I would say this year is when we started being friends, but we knew each other last year. Well, I knew Ned, I don’t think he knew me.

HANNAH AND TAI

Tai: To me, friendship means people or a person who you can rely on for anything. Someone who you look forward to seeing, who you love spending time with. Loyalty is super important for friendship. Somebody you can trust.

Hannah: Somebody you really enjoy being with who makes you laugh, and somebody who’s really trustworthy.

How did you guys meet?

Tai: We have spanish together.

What are your favorite things about each other?

Hannah: She always has a really funny joke about anything and everything.

Tai: I can tell Hannah anything and I know she’ll give me good advice.
