Imperialism -a policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force.

Christopher Columbus showed imperialism towards the Native Americans.


Racism -prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior.

There was a great amount of racism in the 1950's.


Annexation -the action of annexing something, especially territory.

The Texas annexation was to make Texas apart of The U.S

Sphere of Influence

Sphere of Influence - a country or area in which another country has power to affect developments although it has no formal authority.

In 1910 Britain had Sphere of Influence on parts of China

Open Door Policy

The Open Door policy was rooted in the desire of U.S. businesses to trade with Chinese markets, though it also tapped the deep-seated sympathies of those who opposed imperialism.

U.S had an open door policy for trade.

Monroe Doctrine

The Monroe Doctrine is the best known U.S. policy toward the Western Hemisphere. Buried in a routine annual message delivered to Congress by President James Monroe in December 1823, the doctrine warns European nations that the United States would not tolerate further colonization or puppet monarchs.

Roosevelt Corollary

The Roosevelt Corollary was an addition to the Monroe Doctrine articulated by President Theodore Roosevelt in his State of the Union address in 1904 after the Venezuela Crisis of 1902–03. The corollary states that the United States will intervene in conflicts between European countries and Latin American countries.
