Workforce Recruitment Program Webster University | Career Planning & Development Center

Are you interested in working in the government for the summer or after you graduate?

The Workforce Recruitment Program for College Students with Disabilities (WRP) is an annual recruitment and referral program coordinated by the Office of Disability Employment Policy at the U.S. Department of Labor and the U.S. Department of Defense. The aim of the program is to connect federal and select private-sector employers with students and recent graduates with disabilities who have an interest in participating in internships and permanent jobs.

Upon successful completion of the WRP process, your information will be entered into a database for one year. Through this database, federal agencies can contact you to carry out additional hiring processes for their specific internship or job opportunities. Participation in the WRP does not guarantee that you will be hired for an internship or permanent position, though it improves your chances of receiving federal opportunities.

Eligibility

Eligible students must:

  • have a disability and be eligible under the *Schedule A hiring authority
  • be a United States Citizen
  • be a current, full-time, degree-seeking, post-secondary student or a recent graduate who graduated on or after April 1, 2018 who met the preceding requirements while enrolled.

Applicants may also participate if they meet the other requirements for the program but are taking a reduced course load due to a disability, COVID-19, or because it is their last term or semester.

If you have applied to the WRP in the past, you must reapply each program year to participate.

*While documentation of your Schedule A eligibility is not required to be admitted to the WRP database, it is required in most cases for federal agencies' hiring processes. You should plan to have a "proof of disability" letter by the time the WRP database is opened to agencies.

Application Process

Students will use the WRP’s online system to register for the program and submit application materials. Webster University's Career Planning & Development Center supplies a School Coordinator to act as an intermediary between Webster students and the federal representatives involved in WRP.

Registration

The registration period is open between August 24 and October 14, 2020. During that time, you can go to www.wrp.gov to register for a student account.

Approval

Webster’s School Coordinator will review your registration request within a week of submission. Your WRP account will be approved if you're eligible to participate based on WRP's college enrollment requirements. The WRP’s other eligibility requirements are confirmed via self-identification during your online registration process.

Application

Once approved, you will complete the WRP application form fields and submit the following application materials into your online WRP account by October 15, 2020. Do not upload disability documentation, documents that contain your Social Security number, or copies of identification records.

College Transcript

Submit a copy of your transcript (either official or unofficial is acceptable).

Resume

The WRP system accepts Microsoft Word resume files. Use the Career Planning & Development Center's resume writing guides to update your resume. For additional support, schedule an appointment with with your career advisor to have your resume reviewed.

Optional Materials

You may upload other documents, such as writing samples, to support your candidacy for WRP if you so choose.

Informational Interview

If you submit a complete application, the School Coordinator will reach out to you between October 21 and 26, 2020 to assist in scheduling an informational interview with a WRP recruiter. Your informational interview with the WRP recruiter will be conducted sometime between October 26 and November 18, 2020. These conversations typically take place by phone, but other arrangements are possible if accommodations are needed.

Webster University will be assigned a WRP recruiter, who is a volunteer from a federal agency. During your informational interview time, the WRP recruiter will be available as a resource for you to learn about federal service, to receive advice on your career path and goals, and to ask questions about navigating federal agencies' hiring processes. You should prepare a list of questions ahead of your conversation to make effective use of your time.

If you'd like assistance with creating a list of custom questions that align with your goals and interest, schedule a time to meet with your career advisor for guidance.

Connect with Agencies

Once you've completed all of the other steps, your information is entered into a database that is open to all federal agencies starting in mid-December of 2020 and is active for one year. You can update your resume and personal preferences in the database at any time during that year.

Recruiters from federal agencies can then search the database and contact you directly as desired to conduct additional steps in that agency's hiring practices for internships and permanent positions. Neither the School Coordinator nor WRP recruiter will be tracking your communication with specific agencies. It is recommended that you obtain the contact information of any individual that reaches out to you through the database so that you can follow up as you move through the agency’s hiring process.

Because the WRP does not guarantee participation in an internship or job, you're encouraged to pursue other avenues of employment during this time period as well.
