WINGATE UNIVERSITY PARENT NEWSLETTER March 2021

Outfitters moving in

Our spirit store, Wingate Outfitters, has moved from Main Street into the Dickson-Palmer Building in advance of the opening of the new Crowder Welcome Center. Current students and incoming Bulldog families will be able to shop for branded apparel and other Bulldog gear on their way to pick up a Starbucks Coffee or between meetings in the student organization space. The redesigned Dickson-Palmer will eventually become home to the R. Frank Davis Suite of Admissions Offices in addition to the offices of Marketing and Events, Business Intelligence, and Academic and Career Development.

Midterm grades are in

Midterm grades, posted on March 12, are a report of where students stand in their courses. Students can see their grades by clicking Grades under the Current Students tab of MyGate on the website. Talk with your student about their grades and remind them that additional support is available from their professors and from the Academic Resource Center, where they can take advantage of tutoring, supplemental instruction, and help with writing. Students who received a D or F on midterms will have already been contacted by the Dean of Academic Support Programs, who is reaching out to make sure they have access to needed resources.

Covid vaccinations underway; some rules eased

The Health Center began last week administering Covid-19 vaccinations to employees starting with groups 1 through 3, based on Union County Health Department and North Carolina guidelines. Most Wingate students are part of Group 4, phase 2. That’s when students living in residence halls or other group settings will be eligible. Students who do qualify for a vaccine now include support staff, those working in child-care settings or other frontline essential workers. There is no need for your student to wait to get a vaccine at the Health Center if they can receive one sooner elsewhere. In other Covid-related news, some campus rules have been eased. Students can now be outside of their residence halls for longer periods and enjoy increasing capacity at indoor/outdoor venues. Surveillance testing remains an essential part of catching cases early and limiting spread.

Become an Ambassador for One Day, One Dog!

As you know, our students have faced an entirely different kind of adversity over the past year. But the challenges presented by COVID-19 aren't over and our students need your support, now more than ever.

This year's One Day, One Dog is slated for April 15, and we would love to have you serve as an Ambassador for our annual day of giving and service. A One Day, One Dog Ambassador is someone who (1) loves Wingate; (2) leads by example by making a gift to the area of campus that means the most to them; and (3) shares their Wingate story with others.

To become a One Day, One Dog Ambassador, click here and select one of the "projects" where you would like to direct your gift. Here is a quick instructional video on how to give.

Once you have made your gift to become an Ambassador, we will send you a 2021 One Day, One Dog t-shirt to help with your social media content on April 15!

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Brittany Peper at b.peper@wingate.edu.

Reduce registration stress

Registration for classes can be a stressful time. Help reduce that stress by encouraging your student to plan their course selections in NaviGATE, the WU academic advising system, and to schedule a session with their faculty advisor. Registration opened Tuesday for rising seniors and will continue through April 1 with dates determined by class level and credit hours. Students who need to make adjustments will be able to do so through the summer. The Academic Advising Office is available to help.

Registration schedule:

  • Junior Group 1 - Today
  • Junior Group 2 - March 19
  • Sophomore Group 1 - March 23
  • Sophomore Group 2 - March 24
  • Sophomore Group 3 - March 25
  • Freshman Group 1 - March 29
  • Freshman Group 2 - March 30
  • Freshman Group 3 - April 1

* Students will be notified via their Wingate email address for their specific registration group. Classification is based on hours earned.

April 1 deadline: housing sign-ups and course withdrawal

Housing applications for the fall semester opened last week and will close April 1 at 4 p.m. Please have your student email Residence Life if they have questions. April 1 is also the last day students can withdraw from a class without negatively affecting their grade point average. When a student withdraws from a class before the deadline, the course is included in attempted credit hours, but not in GPA credit hours. Students who need advice on whether to withdraw from a course should speak to their advisors or contact the Academic Advising Office.

Bulldog Bucks bargain

Is your student running low on Bulldog Bucks? Bulldog Bucks enhance the campus dining experience and can be used to purchase meals at various retail locations. For a limited time, students will receive a $5 bonus for every $50 purchase in add-on Bulldog Bucks. Visit Wingate Eats for details. Or, to check your student’s available balance, email Chelsea Boulton, the Wingate Eats meal plan coordinator.
