May 18, 1920 is where Pope John Paul 2 was born. Wadowice is a city located in southern Poland situated along the Skawa River. Pope John Paul 2's parents were Karol Woitula (father) and Emila Kaczorowsk (mother). Pope John Paul was also the youngest out of his other two siblings.
Pope John Paul 2 was a very devoted athlete. He enjoyed biking, swimming, playing soccer or volleyball and even found time to enter an international kayaking competition in 1955 only five years before being ordained a bishop!
Pope John Paul 2 went to school at Krakows Tagiellonian University in 1938 where he showed an interest in theatre and poetry. School was closed by Natzis during German occupation of Poland.
Pope John Paul 2 as a priest was never able to marry but he did stay busy. Pope John Paul 2 jobs were priest, philosopher, and a writer.
Pope John Paul 2 said that he decided to serve in missions because he felt a calling to help people in need.On April 2, 2005 in Apostolic Palace, Vatican City Pope John Paul 2 made his last journey.
Pope John Paul 2 served as pope from 1978-2005 in Vatican City, Italy. Pope John Paul 2 left behind a tremendous legacy, he canonized more than 480 men and women. He was known as the Paul the Great because people really trusted and believed in his work.
In 1993 he was presented with the Order of the Eagle Award. 1994 he was presented with the Time's person of the year. 2004 he was presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Also, in 2004 he was presented with the Charlemagne Prize. He was also presented with three more awards.

He made his final journey at the age of 84 from septic shock and cardio- circulatory collapse. Suffered from Parkinson's disease, arthritis, and other ailments for several years before death.
