Federal Work-Study & Student Retention

According to a report by NASPA the Federal Work-Study program can help tackle two nagging issues in higher education: career readiness and retention. Students who see value in these jobs and make connections through them to the campus, peers and professionals may have a better experience in college and be more likely to stay enrolled and graduate at higher rates than non-federal work-study student peers.

According to data from Howard University's Office of Institutional Research, Howard's Federal Work-Study program supports that claim with these key takeaways:

  1. Students do not work as many hours as they would in an off-campus job.
  2. FWS is a more supportive environment and is conducive to improved performance.
  3. Participants in federal work-study have an average 96% 1-year retention rate vs. 82% for non-FWS students.
  4. Participants in federal work-study are 10 percentage points more likely to earn a bachelor's degree after four years, and 20 percentage points more likely after six years.
