Mr. Hubler Weekly Update 09/09/16

Welcome Back Eagles!

Welcome to a new year of school! I love that in education we get to have these clean fresh starts every year. A new beginning to set and conquer new goals, make new friendships, and learn and grow together. I hope that everyone has had a fun and relaxing summer vacation.

I recently climbed to the top of Multnomah Falls to cap off my summer!

This year I have lots of ideas to enhance the learning that takes place in the classroom. I hope that everyone has an opportunity to feel a little bit of fun learning this year.

MATH

In math this year we will be changing up things a bit. There will be no textbook this year, rather I am developing a classroom specific curriculum based on the content standards. My goal is that this will allow more flexibility for myself and the students to explore the topics that they are expected to learn in a way that is effective for all learners. This means that there will be more frequent quizzes/tests, but they will be shorter and more focused on specific skills.

Learning Strategies

This will be my first year teaching the Learning Strategies class, but I am very excited to teach what I have planned for this class. This class will focus on strengthening students executive functioning skills. We will be following the ideas and lessons that were developed by educator and author of Seeing My Time, Marydee Sklar. This will be a very useful and valuable class for students to have as we will be covering time management, organization, metacognition, and other skills necessary for success in school and life. There will also be time built in to this class for students to continue to work on their reading, writing, and analytical thinking skills as we will have a weekly current events activity that we complete in class. Additionally, there will be regular opportunities for students to check in with me about how the school year is progressing for them and to stay caught up on assignments and projects.
