Monkton Park Newsletter Friday 26th January

Life at Monkton

After hearing from Tyrone Mings last Friday about not giving up we started off this week in assembly by thinking about perseverance. Since starting at Monkton Park I have seen lots of examples where children have shown determination and a really positive attitude. This has been really apparent this week when I have listened to some of the children's music lessons. Whether it was guitars, drums, violins or flutes, the quality of musical instrument playing has been really impressive. On Thursday 8th February (10am) we will be holding a violin & recorder assembly and parents of the children taking part are invited.

A couple of weeks ago we mentioned both in assembly and in the newsletter about the amount of packed lunch rubbish thrown away. I am pleased to say that we have seen a dramatic improvement. Well done to all!

School Council

On Thursday I spent some time with the school council to think about how we could improve the school even further. This week they thought about the values that were important to them and from here they tried to prioritise them. They did a fantastic job and we will be using their ideas in forming a new vision for Monkton Park. Well done to the school council!

Work of the Week

Well done to Rosa from Hedgehogs' class, who was selected for KS1 Work of the Week.
Well done to Ethan from Owls' class, who was selected for KS2 Work of the Week.

Open Classrooms

We would just like to remind you that you are invited into classrooms on Monday (29th January, anytime between 3pm and 4pm) with your child to have a look through their books. Hopefully it will be a good opportunity to hear from your child about learning they are proud of, things they have enjoyed doing and also a chance to see how much they have improved since September. Teachers will be on hand to answer general questions you might have. Opportunities to have more in depth conversations about your child's progress will be available in March when we will be running our parent evenings as normal.

Braeside Information Evening

Just a reminder that we will be running our Braeside Information Evening for parents (Year 4) this Monday at 6pm. Children are welcome to come along too but this is not necessary. We look forward to seeing you there.

Payment for Braeside is due by Friday 9th February. The easiest way to check and pay your balance is to login to Parent Pay. Alternatively please come to the school office.

Site Safety

We have added padlocks to the infant playground gates. Although only a small change this has been done to ensure children cannot open the gate to the car park at play times and lunch times.

Battery Recycling

Thank you to all of the children who have been filling their battery recycling boxes. Year 6 will be visiting the classes on Fridays to collect and record the numbers of batteries being recycled. They will then be placed in our new 'Battery Bin'.

Our very own battery bin!

Computer Games

We just wanted to let you know that there have recently been reports in the media about children playing computer games which are inappropriate for primary aged children. We know some are available online to stream and others available as apps. Two that we are aware of at the moment are Five Night at Freddys and Blaze and the Monster Machine (withdrawn from Google Play). Later this year we have Karl Hopwood coming into school who is a highly regarded online safety expert to run activities for children and an information evening for parents.

Well done to the following children who have achieved a bronze award this week:

NETBALL REPORT by Naomi and Madison

Team Blue

Team Blue played against one of the teams from Frogwell School. In the first half they scored 1 goal while Frogwell scored 0. In the second half, 6 more goals were scored by the Monkton Park team while Frogwell scored 1. Well done to James Norman for scoring 5!

Team Red

In the second match Team Red played a different team from Frogwell. In the first half it was very exciting as Monkton Park scored 10 goals (mainly thanks to Naomi and Tamar). By the end of the match the score had increased to 18 goals.

Well done to both teams!
