The Urban Farm at Southeast Ohio Regional Kitchen Cover Crops

After the two types of growing media were added to the raised beds I added fertilizer and then sowed a cover crop to start to bio-activate the media and get ready for 2017

At this point I elected to terminate the cover crops to allow for spring planting. Winter rye can get huge and difficult by May. If terminated and tilled into the soil at this growth stage it adds nitrogen and a small amount of biomass to the soil. Then we planted seedlings.

Harvest started in mid-April. Next year we will plant twice as much lettuce!
