(This is a picture of Neil on the moon) Neil Armstrong was the oldest of three children. His mom taught Sunday school and his dad worked for the Ohio State Government. Neil took his first plane ride when he was six years old. Neil loved building model planes. And, Neil was an eagle scout.
He played baritone horn and loved to read. He read more than a hundred books in elementary school. When Neil was 15, he earned a pilot's license. Neil attended Purdue University in Indiana. Neil had to serve in the U.S Navy in order to go to college. Neil was stationed in Pensacola, Florida where he got his "wings" pin from flight school in 1950. Neil was one of the youngest pilots. He flew 78 missions.
Neil married Jan in 1956 and moved to California. At Edwards Air Force base Neil flew the X-15. The X-15 flew 50 miles above earth. On September 17, 1962 Neil was chosen to be an Astronaut for N.A.S.A. Neil trained in Panama. His training lasted twelve hours a day. In March of 1966 Neil was chosen to pilot Gemini 8 and land on the moon but it didn't. In January 1969 Neil was named commander of the Apollo 11. On July 16, 1969 he took off for the moon in a three stage rocket ship. On July 20, 1969 he landed on the moon. Neil, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins spent 12 hours on the moon because of oxygen supply. Neil was the first man to step on the moon. In August there was a parade for the astronauts and Neil toured 21 countries as a hero.
Neil became a college professor when he retired from N.A.S.A .He died in 2012.
