Best of Tri-county Collie Breeders colliesonline.com

Today, Saturday, April 18, 2020, in the small hamlet of Bethel, Connecticut, birthplace of P.T. Barnum, about 70 miles northeast of New York City, Tri-county Collie Breeders Association would have held their specialty shows. But, as we all know—all the shows in April, including these, are canceled due to the pandemic, leaving many breeders and exhibitors wondering when we will be able to attend dog shows again. These difficult days will pass and we will be back at the shows, enjoying each other's company, each other's dogs and dog shows, again. But until that time, we thought we would take a look back at the Best of Breed winners and celebrate the success from this club's specialty shows during the past twenty years.

Most years since 2000, Tri-county held it's shows on the third Saturday in April. 2001 was the exception, as there was no show, due to a scheduling conflict with the Collie Club of America National Specialty in Louisville, Kentucky. It was in 2008 that Tri-county first held back-to-back, same-day specialty shows and that continued for the next 11 years. Entries peaked in 2010 and 2013 with entry numbers in the mid 70s, nearly double the number of roughs to smooths. Years 2019 and 2000 saw similiar entry totals with 43 roughs and 23 smooths in '19 and 48 roughs and 17 smooths in 2000.

There were 31 Best of Breed winners and four kennels, Marnus, Devinwood, Tartanside and C And J, with three or more Breed wins at this club's shows—some with the same dog and some with multiple dogs. Marnus Collies took home four breed wins, including three for CH Marnus Lucky Strike. He won both shows in 2011 under Roxann Heit and Joyce Beddow. He also took the top award in 2013 under judge Mary Wells. CH Marnus Make My Day was awarded the Breed in 2006 by judge Martha Ramer.

CH Tartanside Foolproof was awarded Best of Breed in 2002 by judge Steve Haslett.

Tartanside Collies also won the breed three times with three different dogs, including CH Tartanside Foolproof in 2002 under judge Steve Haslett, class dog Tartanside Taejon in 2005 under judge Marion Durholz and GCH Tartanside Ticonderoga in 2014 under judge Richella Veatch.

CH Devinwood A Perfect Stranger was awarded Best of Breed at both shows held in 2010.

Devinwood Collies, also won the breed three times at Tri-county, including in 2018 under judge Anne Cross with GCH Ashbury Wild Horses, and both shows in 2010 with CH Devinwood A Perfect Stranger under judges Betty Peplin and Anne Cross. Securing her spot on this list was GCH C And J Silver Charm of Chrysalis, who took three breed wins under judge Judy Bryant in 2014 and both shows in 2012 under judges Barbara Linder and Linda Simmons.

GCH C And J Silver Charm of Chrysalis took home the breed three times between 2012 and 2014.

Below we provide a list of the shows with the year, the variety and sex for the breed winner, name of the dog, the judge, the total entry, and the number of roughs and smooths. See if you can remember the shows, and more importantly, the Collies who won them. If you can't remember, no worries—we have provided links to help refresh your memory.
