Character Analysis


Santiago is a young, determined, Andalusian boy. He has his heart set on one thing. Finding his personal legend. He starts off not wanting to fulfill his destiny because he doesn't want to leave his flock, and leave being a shepherd behind. After the help of motivation from people he meets, he decides to go find the treasure, and his personal legend.

The Gypsy WomAn

The Gypsy women is a dream interpreter, who helps motivate Santiago to follow his personal legend. In return she wants 1/10 of the treasure, if he finds it.

Melchizedek (King of Salem)

Melchizedek comes to Santiago as an old, wise man. He is also the King of Salem, and is a main contributor in pushing Santiago to achieve his personal legend, go to Egypt, and find the treasure. In return, Melchizedek asks for 1/10 of his flock.

The Crystal Merchant

The Crystal Merchant has dreams but no motivation. He is scared to live his life to the fullest because of the fear of failure. Also, the Crystal Merchant has a crystal shop on the top of a hill in Tangier. He was overall successful until the city was not longer a favorable port.

The Englishman

The Englishman is smart, reads many books, and is ambitious towards being an alchemist. He becomes friends with Santiago because they are both striving towards achieving their personal legends. The Englishman is believed by the Alchemist to get to much knowledge from books, and not enough from experience.


Fatima is a beautiful young women, who waits for Santiago to achieve his personal legend, because he is in love with her. Fatima gets water from well in her daily activities. She seems to not have any personal legend of her own.

The Alchemist

The Alchemist is supposedly 200 years old, and possesses powers, and is a practitioner of alchemy. Many have not seen the Alchemist, and he has in his possession the Master Work, which is considered the goal of alchemy.
