GLENWOOD PARK Elementary School REPAIR FWCS Building Renovation

RENOVATIONS AT GLENWOOD PARK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL BEGAN IN THE SPRING OF 2017 AND WERE COMPLETED IN SUMMER 2018. WORK INCLUDED BOTH EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR IMPROVEMENTS TO THE FACILITY. GLENWOOD PARK ORIGINALLY OPENED IN 1965 AND A 4-CLASSROOM ADDITION WAS CONSTRUCTED IN 1991. THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME THAT THE EXISTING BUILDING HAD RECEIVED A FULL SCALE RENOVATION.
THE FIRST COMPONENT OF IMPROVING THE OVERALL EFFICIENCY OF THE BUILDING IS TO ENSURE THAT THE BUILDING ENVELOPE PROVIDES AN EFFECTIVE THERMAL BARRIER FROM OUTSIDE CONDITIONS. THE ORIGINAL WINDOW WALL SYSTEM WAS SINGLE PANE GLASS AND THIN METAL PANELS AND OFTEN ONE COULD MEASURE SIGNIFICANT TEMPERATURE DIFFERENCES FROM ONE SIDE OF A ROOM TO THE OTHER. ALL OF THE EXTERIOR WINDOW SYSTEMS WERE REPLACED WITH NEW THERMALLY EFFICIENT INSULATED WINDOW SYSTEMS AND EXTERIOR WALLS WERE INSULATED, ENSURING CONSISTENT, COMFORTABLE AIR TEMPERATURES THROUGHOUT THE BUILDING.

A MAJOR COMPONENT OF THE REPAIR FWCS PROGRAM IS THE REPLACEMENT OF AGED AND FAILING INFRASTRUCTURE. PRIOR TO THE RENOVATION, IT WAS BECOMING MORE AND MORE DIFFICULT TO MAINTAIN CONSISTENT HEATING OF THE BUILDING AND INDIVIDUAL CLASSROOMS. THE BOILERS HAD BEEN REPLACED WITH ANNUAL CAPITAL FUNDING, BUT THE DISTRIBUITION SYSTEM AND UNIT VENTILATORS WERE FAILING. THE BUILDING ALSO WAS NOT AIR CONDITIONED.

AS PART OF THE RENOVATION, THE FAILING DISTIBUTION PIPING SYSTEMS AT GLENWOOD PARK WERE COMPLETELY REMOVED AND REPLACED AND NEW VERTICAL UNIT VENTILATORS WERE INSTALLED IN EACH CLASSROOM, PROVIDING FOR INDIVIDUAL TEMPERATURE CONTROL. A CENTRAL CHILLER AND COOLING DISTRIBUTION WAS ALSO PROVIDED AND THE BUILDING IS NOW FULLY AIR CONDITIONED.
PLUMBING SYSTEMS WERE ALSO IN NEED OF ATTENTION DUE TO THE AGE AND DETERIORATION OF THE IRON PIPING MAINS. AS PART OF THE RENOVATION, ALL DOMESTIC WATER PIPING, DRAINS AND PLUMBING FIXTURES WERE REPLACED.
BUILDING SECURITY IS ALSO A FOCUS OF THE REPAIR FWCS PROGRAM. PRIOR TO THE RENOVATION, VISITORS TO GLENWOOD PARK WOULD ENTER THE BUILDING AND WALK PAST SEVERAL ROOMS BEFORE ENTERING THE OFFICE, PROVIDING ACCESS TO ANY PART OF THE BUILDING AS SOON AS THE PERSON ENTERED. AS PART OF THE RENOVATION, THE OFFICE SUITE WAS RELOCATED TO THE MAIN ENTRANCE FROM THE PARKING LOT AND SECURE VESTIBULE ENTRY WAS ADDED. THE INNER VESTIBULE DOORS ARE LOCKED AT ALL TIMES, MAKING IT NECESSARY FOR ALL VISITORS TO THE BUILDING TO ENTER THROUGH THE OFFICE AND BE CHECKED IN PRIOR TO BEING ALLOWED ENTRY TO THE REST OF THE BUILDING.
PRIOR TO RENOVATION, THE CLASSROOMS WERE SHOWING THE WEAR AND TEAR OF DECADES OF USE. CLASSORM FINISHES AND FIXTURES WERE WORN AND SOMETIMES BROKEN, LIGHTING LEVELS WERE SUBSTANDARD AND AUDIO/VIDEO COMPONENTS FOR USE IN TEACHING WERE ANTIQUATED.
RENOVATED CLASSROOMS RECEIVED NEW VERTICAL UNIT VENTILATORS FOR HEATING AND COOLING AND BRIGHTER, ENERGY EFFICIENT LED LIGHTING SYSTEMS. YELLOWED AND WARPED CEILING TILES AND ASBESTOS TILE FLOORING WERE REPLACED WITH NEW CEILINGS, VINYL COMPOSITION TILE AND CARPET FLOORING. MARKERBOARDS AND TACKBOARDS REPLACED CHALKBOARDS, ELIMINATING CHALK DUST, AND NEW PROJECTION SYSTEMS FOR TEACHING WERE INSTALLED IN EACH ROOM.
THIS NEWLY RENOVATED CLASSROOM PROVIDES AN IMPROVED LEARNING ENVIRONMENT, CONSISTENT WITH MODERN EDUCATIONAL STANDARDS.
CLASSROOMS WERE OUTFITTED WITH STORAGE CUBBIES AND COAT HOOKS FOR STUDENT STORAGE NEEDS, AS WELL AS A TEACHER WARDROBE UNIT. CLASSROOM DOORS WERE REPLACED AND OUTFITTED WITH NEW SECURITY HARDWARE TO INCREASE SAFETY AND REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF TIME REQUIRED TO LOCK DOWN THE CLASSROOM IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY.
THE MEDIA CENTER, MULTI-PURPOSE ROOM AND OTHER SHARED AREAS ALSO BENEFITED FROM THE RENOVATION, RECEIVING NEW HEATING AND COOLING SYSTEMS, LIGHTING, FINISHES AND EQUIPMENT. A SPECIAL FEATURE AT GLENWOOD PARK ELEMENTARY IS A MEMORIAL COI POND AND OUTDOOR LEARNING AREA WHICH WAS ALSO RESTORED AND UPDATED AS PART OF THE PROJECT.
THE RENOVATIONS TO GLENWOOD PARK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WERE COMPLETED AS PART OF THE REPAIR FWCS PROJECTS APPROVED IN 2016, ALONG WITH FULL RENOVATIONS AT 9 OTHER SCHOOL BUILDINGS, THE ADDITION OF AIR CONDITIONING AT 6 ADDITIONAL BUILDINGS TO COMPLETE THE ADDITION OF AIR CONDITIONING AT ALL FWCS SCHOOLS, WINDOW REPLACEMENTS AT 2 ADDITIONAL BUILDINGS, SECURITY IMPROVEMENTS AT 25 BUILDINGS AND PARTIAL ROOF REPLACEMENTS AT 4 BUILDINGS WAS MADE POSSIBLE BY THE SUPPORT OF OUR COMMUNITY.
