Line An element of art

Lines are formed when two objects meet or overlap

Line Types

Structural Lines

Lines that hold a design together

SKETCH LINES

They provide more details than most line types and give a 3D appearance.

Outlines

Refer to the outer edge of a silhouette or the line made by the edge of an object

Gesture Lines

Emphasize direction and fluidity

Calligraphy

Precise, elegant handwriting or lettering done by hand

Implied Lines

Suggested lines that are not actually drawn or incorporated in a work of art

Example: Buildings

PATTERN

The repetition of a surface element

TEXTURE

Surface quality of an object

Example: Rough, smooth, scarred

Line Combinations

A mixture of different line types and personalities

Artists might use line combinations to create a sense of depth. Bold lines generally appear closer to the viewer. Indistinct lines seem farther away
