Vasco Nunez de Balboa

Born in Spain in 1475, explorer and conquistador Vasco Núñez de Balboa helped establish the town of Darién on the Isthmus of Panama, becoming interim governor.

The first European to see the eastern part of the Pacific Ocean in 1513.

He founded the settlement of Santa María la Antigua del Darién in present-day Panama in 1510

helped establish the first stable settlement on the South American continent at Darién
