MVP Race By: Cole Frate

Russell Westbrook is currently at the top of the race with James Harden as his leading competitor. Russell plays for the Oklahoma City Thunder and was drafted 4th overall in the 2008 NBA Draft, from UCLA. Westbrook is currently averaging a triple double, something that has never been done before. He has 31.8 points per game, 10.4 assists per game, and 10.7 rebounds a game, a crazy statline. He has just recently tied the great Oscar Robinson with 41 triple doubles in a season which is an outstanding accomplishment.

James Harden is at the top of the race with Westbrook. Harden, the all star shooting guard who just made the move to point guard this year, plays for the Houston Rockets. He was drafted by the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2009, he was the 3rd overall pick out of Arizona State. James has led his team to 53 wins so far in the season taking 3rd overall in the conference. He is averaging 29.2 points per game, 11.2 assists per game, and 8.1 rebounds per game. Harden is having a monster year.

LeBron James, if you have not heard of him, you must be living under a rock. Lebron is, by most people, considered the 3rd best player to ever play the game behind Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant. LeBron may not be having as good of a season as some of the other candidates, but the 32 year old that joined the NBA out of highschool is probably the best leader in the league. He also has led the Cleveland Cavaliers to first place in the Eastern Conference and has the power to win the championship. James is averaging 26.3 points, 8.7 assists, and 8.5 rebounds, not bad.

Kawhi Leonard is arguably the best two-way player in the league. Both defense and offense, Leonard has proven to be unstoppable. The 15th overall pick in 2011, came out of San Diego State college and was very underrated coming into the NBA. Kawhi is averaging 25.7 points, 3.6 assists, and 5.9 rebounds. Kawhi has also mad many game winning shots throughout the year and is as clutch as they come. Kawhi Leonard is not one of the main candidates for MVP but do not underestimate the power of defense in the league.

IT4 is the nickname for NBA super power, Isaiah Thomas. The fans also call Thomas The King Of The 4th Quarter for a reason, Isaiah is unstoppable in the clutch time, hence IT4. Making Thomas even crazier is the fact that he is 5'9", and was the last pick in the 2011 NBA Draft, barely even making the cut. Isaiah is averaging 29.1 points, 5.9 assists, and 2.7 rebounds. Truly amazing all of the crazy things IT4 has done this year.

Now we get to Kevin Durant. Most people call him a snake but before he began to have injury problems, I called him a serious MVP candidate. The trader left Westbrook in OKC and joined the Warriors superteam along with Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green. before the injury Durant was averaging 25.3 points, 4.8 assists, and 8.2 rebounds. Now, Durant is likely out of the race due to injury but it's fun to imagine an NBA with the top 3 MVP candidates, Westbrook, Harden, and Durant, all former teammates.
