McKay Creek Elementary School April 2017 Newsletter

McKay Mustangs have been working in school to become better students and better citizens. Our students have enjoyed some learning outside of the classroom as well. We have some fun spring time activities coming up, but our staff is dedicated to making learning time the priority, while still finding time for some spring-time fun! We will have Grandparents (or special friend) BBQ, field trips, track meets, talent show, field day, and many more activities and opportunities for learning outside of the traditional classroom.

Students at McKay are helping out as leaders. Some are greeters in the hallways to greet guests, or students coming from the cafeteria to the playground. Some even helped clean up the front area of our school, as a service project. They wanted to help keep our school neat and tidy. They were thrilled to help out around earth day and give back to our school at the same time. We have some GREAT stewards at McKay!

GREAT stewards of the land.... working on improving our school!

The "Yo-yo" man came to our school to talk about making school cool, the importance of being a good citizen at school, and the importance of attendance. It was a quick assembly, with some fantastic yo-yo tricks!

Megan Fisher, a 4th grader at McKay, won the District Future Chef Challenge, provided as an opportunity through Sodexo School Food Services. She won with her Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup recipe! We were all thrilled to find out she also was the regional winner. She was presented with a certificate and a mini-ipad for her work on this wonderful opportunity. Kids working together to do more learning outside of school! Way to go, Megan!

Our school provided artifacts for, and attended a viewing of the Pendleton School District Art Show. Below is a group of third graders posed in front of their art. It was once again, an amazing show. What a wonderful way to celebrate art!

April 17th - 21st was Staff Appreciation Week. We not only have a great staff loaded with professionals who put kids first in all decisions we make, but also we like to have a lot of fun. Laughter is important. Our "super staff", as seen in the photo of their pictures on superhero bodies, honored one another with different-themed days. From muffins, to chocolate, to refreshing drinks, we celebrated the wonderful people we work with and the fantastic school in which we work.

Fun times with staff appreciation!

Our fifth graders put on an excellent play about European Explorers. Our student body not only learned facts about the explorers, but also had a giggle a time or two from the amazing acting skills and delivery of "punch-lines". Mrs. Noble guided students to two productions, one for our student body and the other for parents and guests. Even our school board member, Dave Krumbein, made a showing and enjoyed the performance. Way to go 5th graders!

Our Food Service Company, Sodexo, did a face-left to the serving area at McKay. They added signage, a mural, and painted to help make the environment more inviting. Our students report that they love the new updates, and are respecting the beauty of the area by being careful not to touch or peel the decals on the wall. Thank you to Sodexo for helping make our eating area even more inviting!

McKay is such a great place to learn and make friends. Here's a photo of me taking a selfie with some of the kids who also celebrate their birthday in April. Birthday table happens once per month and is a very popular day at McKay. Making connections with kids is important to everyone, especially our fabulous Child Development Specialist, Patti Thorne. She does such a great job of connecting with every student, and helping students connect with staff members as well as other students!

McKay School is a GREAT place to learn!
