Bird stewards brave inclement weather to protect the shorebirds! STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBERT NEFF

July 22, 2017. Headed out to Fort DeSoto this morning to check out the bird activity and storms, which were in the Gulf heading toward shore. When the RADAR is littered with storms, I am waiting on the beach. Today, I opted to do two things, photograph the storms from Fort De Soto Bird Sanctuary, and talk to the bird steward so I could catch up on the bird nesting news.

Florida Audubon oversees the Bird Stewarding program. You can volunteer to be a bird steward and help protect shorebird colonies. For more information and to inquire about being a volunteer, visit the bird steward web page.

The cloud on the left is a virga cloud. This is an "observable streak or shaft of precipitation falling from a cloud that evaporates or sublimates before reaching the ground."

The Bird Sanctuary is next to Lot 9's beach,

The bird steward saw the fishermen had ignored the "KEEP OUT" sign and encroached on the Bird Sanctuary. She politely moved them back to the other side.
