New Hong Kong leader: Carrie Lam

HONGKONG

The immediate task for Lam is to form a strong ruling team to take on the challenges. Although she did not give any specific names, she said she would welcome people of ability regardless of affiliation, and indeed it is important for Lam to tap support from a wide political spectrum. This could help to ease long-standing confrontations and to smooth governance.

Being seen as "Beijing's candidate" already makes her an object of mistrust among many, before she is even sworn in.

CHINA

We hope that Hong Kong under the leadership of Lam will get rid of infighting, redefine its position in the Asia-Pacific and the world and figure out the main contradictions of development. It needs to seriously take a ride on the express train of the nation's rapid development and properly handle how it maintains its characteristics and strengthens ties with the mainland.

THE UK

While Beijing has not explicitly backed any candidate, senior officials have stressed certain conditions must be met, including a new leader having the “trust” of China’s Communist leaders.

THE US

Mrs. Lam, who will take office on July 1, will have to manage not only the city’s political turmoil, but also a rapidly aging population, low social mobility, slowing economic growth and one of the largest wealth gaps in the world.
